First Blood

In a D&D fight, at what point is "first blood"?

Is blood drawn with the first hit? Would a fighter with 50 hit points be blooded by a hit for 3 damage (taking the fighter to 47)?

Or is 0 hit points the first point where blood is drawn?

Say two opponents agree for a duel to end at "first blood". How would this be adjudicated with D&D hit points?

What do you think?

No thoughts? At all? From anyone?

I'm not sure what your asking. Are you talking about a duel situation? If so, I'd say the first character to be dropped to below 25% hps or to receive a critical hit is the loser. I think the "First Blood" thing is more of a renaissance thing than a medieval thing. If your dealing with rapier duels, then I'd say it would be to the first hit. Lord help you if you don't have Superior Expertise.

If injury poison affects someone every time they are damaged, it is reasonable to assume that any attack that succesfully damages a character is sufficient to draw first blood.

You could use the Spycraft/Star Wars system for duels, and say that wound points = actual damage = constitution score. Thus, a fighter with an 18 con and 50 hp would have to get knocked down to 18 hp before blood was drawn.

Kugar's right about the poison, though.

I don't think duels until the first hit work well in D&D, as there is no real defense! ;)

Better have a certain percentage set (like 1/3 hit points lost).

Yep- considering that hit points represent more than just physical damage sustained (or at least used to) , it'd be hard to determine exactly when first blood is drawn.

PC's idea above might work though.
