First Fantasy Novel/Series You Read?

Dad read Narnia to me when I was around 7 years old. I remember crying when it was over -- I didn't want it to end. My wife doesn't understand people who re-read books, but to me it's like making sure it's never over. :)

Amen. I read a lot and I love returning to old favorites from time to time. It's like seeing an old friend after a long absence. Priceless.

Starman

First fantasy was Sword of Shannara.

First sci fi was, I believe, Heinlen's youg adult books, Star beast, Starman jones and a book called grey planet that I am not sure who wrote. Went on to read andre norton and such after that.

I think the Prydain Chronicles were probably my first foray into what we'd consider true fantasy novels. Followed fairly shortly thereafter by Tolkien and C.S. Lewis.

Chronicles of Narnia for me... then I found LoTR (but only books two and three - I had no idea what was going on, and stopped mid-way through The Two Towers only to pick it up a few years after when I found FoTR).

Another one for Chronicles of Narnia. Read that in elementary school, not sure what grade. From there I read The Hobbit and the LotR trilogy. Read Dragons of Autumn Twilight when it was first published from the Dragonlance series.

I read the Narnia series in third grade upon recomendation from my speech teacher. I don't remember why I went to a speech teacher (must have been a speech pathologist of some sort. Maybe I had a lisp), or what his name was. But I should give him a shout out for getting me started on fantasy literature (and, I guess, curing my speech problem).

Here's to you, speech pathologist at South Conway Elementary circa 1983!

For me, it was Edgar Rice Burroughs' "John Carter of Mars" series, which I started when I was 9 or so and devoured one after the other until I had finished the series.
