small d6
medium d8
large d10
huge d12

I was just going to say the same thing.

And all monsters have X(d_size)+X(Con_Mod) hit points, (or X(Con_Mod+d_size) if you want to be picky), so the formula is very consistent so far. It's possible that being Legendary bumped up the value of X, but it would require more analysis.
 

Or maybe the concept of the vampire has changed so that they are now more formidable. I'm ok with that.

Not every dragon is legendary, the one in the starter set isnt. Similarly I suspect not every vampire will be, but some particularly bad ass ones are! If this is the kind of flexible mantle legendary is, I will be very pleased indeed.
