Well, since I've got this written up, I might as well post it: the background for Brosnan, Clr 1 of Heironeous that I used in a very short-lived game. Strangely, it bears a startling similarity to the iconic satire of a cleric background I posted above. Brosnan knelt as the oil ran down his head and over his chest, the particles of gold dust glittering like stars in the viscous liquid. “Today we anoint thee Brosnan,” intoned the third master of Axes. “You shall go forth into the world to display Heironeous’s valor in word and deed. Anointed with oil as our master was bathed in meersalm,” at this Brother-Corporal Vindicus placed a polished battle axe in Brosnan’s outsretched hads, “and armed with your axe as our master wields his.” “Stand Brother Brosnan.” Brosnan stood up. “Now go forth and gain glory for the Invincible and Valorous Knight.” Brosnan stood outside the Hall of the Valorous and looked at the dusty road ahead of him. He fought the temptation to scratch at the new tattoo on his left arm. The pain would pass just like it had during his initiation. All told, it his life hadn’t gone too badly. The only son of a merchant who lost father, mother, and inheritance in one blow when his father’s shop burned to the ground could never have expected to be an anointed Brother of the Hall of the Valorous. And now, only Istus knew what fate held for him. Brosnan rubbed his eye and looked at the golden dust on his fingertip. His was a different life now. The road held many dangers—perils that would assault his body, his virtue, or both. The world he saw down the road was not a place for the unwary. Knights with the tattoos of the fifth circle had been known to die. And yet, Heironeous saw fit to distribute his blessings through a young brother who did not yet have the tattoos of the second. It was a long road ahead. In fact, Brosnan couldn’t see where it ended; it seemed to stretch to the end of the horizon. His axe slipped effortlessly from its sheath as Brosnan strode toward the stand of ash trees that bordered the road. With a crash, a long straight branch fell to the ground before him. Quickly he stripped away the bark, twigs and branches to provide himself with a long straight staff. Without his brother initiates, life would be different. He would have to rely upon himself more. He would have to decide who to believe. Decisions would not be as clear as they were during the lessons of Brother-Captain Eckhardt. Cleaning his axe with a rag, he slipped it back into its sheath. Then again, he thought, maybe they would be that “easy.” Eckhardt’s teaching was not simple. What he decided would certainly matter more in the world than it did in the halls of the initiates though. Taking some lamp oil from a flask, he rubbed it into the naked flesh of the wood. It wouldn’t do to have it splitting or cracking as he traveled. “The axe is not sharpened unless it is to hew flesh from bone. The armor is not polished except that its good condition may be known and it may save its wearer in battle. Nor is a man made for soft living and mindless pursuit of pleasure.” Such were the lessons of Heironeous. Brosnan would find his destiny down the long and dusty road from the Hall. And remaining steadfast in virtue, he would attain the victor’s prize. With his staff in his hand, his axe at his side, and his shield on his back, Brosnan stepped onto the road. . . .
