I don't go in for long backgrounds, mostly because (to my mind) the adventure hasn't really started for the character yet! My current PC is Fareena the Cook. A red-headed girl was beaten by her stepfather and sold into servitude working as a cooks assistant at a very young age. While turning the spit she used to make up pretend magic charms to protect herself from the heat, and other pretend magic charms for when she had to light the fires. During her teenage years her fiery temper developed, and some real power started appearing in her charms... at the age of 16 she abandoned the place where she worked and joined up with a large wagon train heading out into the steppes. You never know when someone might need a decent cook... As a Sor 1 her spells were burning hands and endure elements (back in 3e endure elements was considerably more useful!). She has 4 skill points per level (human sorcerer, 13 Int) and her starting skills were profession(cook) 4, concentration 4, spellcraft 4, intimidate (cross-class) 2. - the only benefit she gained from the conversion to 3.5e was that intimidate was retconned into a class skill for her. Her best ability was Cha, her second best was Con. If pressed into melee combat she uses an iron frying pan to fight with (treated as a light mace). When questioned about what kind of class she is, what kind of adventurer she always replies "a cook". Except now, since at 9th level she gained the ability to polymorph herself she felt a rush of power and proclaimed loudly "no longer shall I be Fareena the lowly cook... NOW i am Fareena the CHEF!". In her heart she is still a cook though. Cheers
