My question to proponents of Weapon Master giving four weapon proficiencies is this: How many weapons does the character taking the feat often want to learn? IMO it is typically only one or two and I can't imagine many more really. Actually, since I have been playing 5E (admittedly, not long), no one in our group has even thought of taking this feat and most of us think it is pretty pointless. As Chaosmancer writes, characters who want to know several weapons are typically already battlers anyway (or if not battlers they can will dip into battler classes for the weapons and other reasons, making the feat useless for them) unless it is a new, exotic weapon or something... Most casters rely on their cantrips and other spells instead of a weapon, and what weapons they do use are very much secondary with few exceptions. Personally, I would rather start as a Fighter, even if only for 1-2 levels, and then move on to the non-battler class. Now, not only do I know how to use the weapons I want, I also have Second Wind, maybe Action Surge, and a Fighting Style along with more hit points. I doubt I will ever reach capstone levels, so playing a Fighter 2/ Wizard 18 for example would be fine and won't cost me a feat. I think a blend like features to balance proficiency in one or two weapons, a +1 Str or Dex ASI, and something like attempts to disarm you have disadvantage or something. I don't know, but IMO as it is there are so many better feats out there and I doubt I'd ever take it or likely see it taken by others.
