The thief in my group had a cloak of the manta ray. The bard cast invisibility on the rogue who rolled extremely high for his stealth check. He stealthed onto the ship, found Hekaton and his adamantine chains, and searched the other rooms. He stole the spellbook before tripping the trap in another room and was turned to stone. He was promptly thrown overboard and sank to the bottom. When he reverted to fleash, he put his hood back up and swam to the surface, enduring a bit of crushing damage on the way. The group then used their rod of the vonindod to locate the ship again. The bard used control weather to knock out the wind and cause impenetrable fog. They then used the rod of the vonindod as a sonar and flew the airship to the crows nest of the prison ship, sneaking onto the ship and slowly taking everyone out. The bard died through a bit of bad luck and being hit by a merrow harpoon and being pulled overboard at 0 hit points. They eventually freed Hekaton, who retrieved the body of the bard from the deeps and swam home. The airship had already exhausted its supplies and was heading back to Waterdeep. The rogue set about attuning to the bard's conch, and its a good thing he did, because as the hour came up, the krakken arrived and started squeezing the ship to pieces. They teleported to Maelstrom as the ship disintegrated around them. It never ceases to amaze me how groups can tackle the same situation so differently but still turn into great stories.
