D&D 5E Fog of War

Do you use a pc/laptop and software to display maps on the screen, and if so, which software offers the best 'fog of war' mapping option?

I took a look at some forum posts for Maptools but their fog of war option wasn't true fog of war (to cut a long story short).

I use Roll20. They have fog of war, which is OK, and they have dynamic lighting. Dynamic lighting is brilliant - it shows what the character can see based on their positioning, whether they have darkvision, and what light sources are available.

My players tell me it adds to the paranoia and atmosphere and it becomes a lot more easy to get lost in a complex when you can't see where you have already been. So much so that the players have discussed designating someone to draw maps on paper as they go so that they are less likely to get in trouble if they have to flee.

It does take some setting up though - it's worth it to me.

Sounds ideal, but is the dynamic lighting free or with the subscription service?

The dynamic lighting is part of the subscription service. I think that costs me about NZ$7 so probably around £3-4 per month.

The fog of war is free, but that's just blocking sections from view and revealing them when ready (or hiding them again). Perfectly good, just not as cool and it doesn't take individual character's POV into account - everyone sees the same thing.
