Forgotten Realms Novels

Captain Tagon

First Post
Hey, I was just wondering if there were any FR novels anyone would recommend. The only ones I've really read have been a few of the Drizzt ones and the Cleric Quintet but I've recently become more interested in the setting and I'm curious as to what out there is considered quality, or at least good entertainment.

Try Forsaken House by Richard Baker. He is one of the authors in the War of the Spider Queen Series. Which I think is pretty good as well.

The Rage and The Rite books 1 and 2 of the "Year of Rogue Dragons" trilogy by Richard Lee Byers are two excellent books!

Also, Lady of Poison by Bruce R. Cordell and Mistress of the Night by Don Bassingwaith and Dave Gross, books 1 and 2 of The Priests series, are good as well. Both books are standalone novels that deal with a certain deity's priesthood and their rival faith.

Evermeet by Elaine Cunningham is a very good one. She's done a Waterdeep novel with Ed Greenwood that's coming out later this year. I am reading Silverfall right now, which seems pretty good. It just recently came out in paperback. I've been intrigued by Forsaken House, but I'm waiting for the rest of the trilogy to come out so I can read it all in one go.

You probably want to check out the Avatar Trilogy (Shadowdale, Tantras and Waterdeep) and the following book, Prince of Lies. That last one is really good. Don't bother reading Crucible, the "sequel" to Prince of Lies. Not worth it.

You may want to check out the Return of the Archwizards trilogy if only to be informed of the events. The books themselves are not very good. They are written by the same author as Crucible. The anthology, Realms of Shadow, however, is a pretty good read.

I would also recommend Elaine Cunningham's previous books, Elfsong, Elfshadow and Silver Shadows. They're an entertaining read and a good lead-up to Evermeet, which is superb.

hrrmm...not really that familiar with FR novels, outside of Salvatore and Cunningham.

Stay far, far, away from anything by Ed Greenwood, especially if it involves Elminster "I save the world and bang hot chicks 20x a day" the uber-annoying wizard.

I seem to remember liking a series that begin with "Azure Bonds", way, way back...

Add another vote for Elaine Cunningham. I have enjoyed all of the books I have read by her, even the Counselors and Kings trilogy.

Azure Bonds: It's the first of the Finder's Stone Trilogy. Good books! ;) Then there's Masquerades (which I haven't read) and Tymora's Luck which finish the tale of Finder.

Daughter of the Drow and the sequels are excellent novels as well! :)

I remember the very first Harper book, The parched Sea. Takes place in the huge desert. Doesn't deal with any "great" heroes, just an average Harper. I thought it was cool.

My personal favorites:

Evermeet by Elaine Cunningham

Cormyr by Ed Greenwood and Jeff Grubb

Azure Bonds by Kate Novak and Jeff Grubb

Realms of the Underdark edited by J. Robert King

Realms of Mystery edited by Philip Athans
