Forgotten Realms Novels

Currently reading Elminster's Daughter. Kinda cool. Making of a Mage was great too. Yes, they're by Ed Greenwood and they're good work.
Elaine Cunningham's Song and Swords series is a great read, the Danilo Thann character is a favorite of mine.

I liked Jeff Grubbs Alais series of books. One of which is the Wyvernspur book. I forget the titles off the top of my head :)

The Avatar trilogy has gotten mixed reviews but I would say its a good place to start since a good portion of the FR novels are set after the Time of Troubles and the Avatar trilogy goes into detail about the Time of Troubles.

The new Rage of Dragons books are pretty good too. I just got part 2 of the Trilogy.

The Alias series aka The Finder's Stone Trilogy
Azure Bonds, The Wyvern's spur, Song of the Saurials

The classic FR novels are the Icewind Dale Trilogy, that introduced Drizzt & company. The first novel in that series really established TSR as a publishing company (along with the Dragonlance trilogy).

The cleric quintet is also pretty good.

And lets not forget the Horde Trilogy and the Druidhome trilogy.

Spellfire would be a good book to start with, really captures the flavor of the Realms

Seconded on Elaine Cunningham's books, and Salvatore's too.

The Avatar Trilogy (Shadowdale, Tantras, and Waterdeep) would be a good pick-up, as would the Shadow of the Avatar trilogy (Shadows of Doom, Cloak of Shadows, All Shadows Fled) by Ed Greenwood (actually, I would recommend any book by Ed Greenwood, whether it involves the Realms or not). The Avatar Trilogy recounts the main events of the Time of Troubles, when the Gods walked Faerun, and the Shadow of the Avatar trilogy takes place during the same time frame, and involves different main characters.

Who cares if Elminster saves the world and gets to bang 20+ chicks a day? Some guys would be so lucky. And after saving the world from assorted gods, demi-gods, and liches wouldn't you want to unwind with a beautiful wench?
