Forming a Classic Adventurer's Guild - Ideas, anyone?

Angcuru

First Post
I've decided that once Angcuru Ioniel reaches 20th level (hey, it has to happen EVENTUALLY, doesn't it), he's going to begin to form together something of an Adventurer's Guild. Don't know exactly how that would work, but it's an idea. But I DO know that he'll do something along the lines of bulldozing his current Residences and putting up a guildhall. ;)

I figure it'll work along the lines of something like this (just ideas so far, feel free to add/point out clashing ideas and/or inconsistencies):

Any character may join. So whether your character is a fighter, fighter/rogue/weapon master, rogue, wizard/sorcerer, cleric/druid, monk/bard/dragon discpile, or barbarian, ANYTHING, they can join if they wish.

Characters who join the guild will be issued a rank/position/thingy to indicate their membership. Those of higher rank have additional resources/stuff/opportunities available to them.

There would be quests to be done that would benefit the Town of Ascension and/or the Guild, for which those who accept and complete the tasks would be granted points/something which when a certain amount is reached, a promotion ensues.

Also, there would be distinctions among members, with those characters who are role-played in-character well enough, with real personality, and high enough level, of course, could be given unique positions. For example. Say Kebur joins the adventurer's guild, and proves his worth as a dwarf devoted to his faith, and therefore, to the well-being of most(cause some people are just icky, or more specifically, EEEEEEVIL). He might prove his devotion and usefulness to the the guild through quests and such, and be granted the position of Head of Matters of the Divine or somesuch, and have duties accordingly, as well as priveliges.

There would be a weekly (real world time) fee that the characters would pay to maintain membership. I'm thinking 500 gold per character level/week (think along the lines of a non-religious tithe). Not unreasonable, considering that any level of character can easily pull in that amount in a fairly small span of time. Taking level advancement into account, a character will be charged an amount equal to 500x their average character level for that week. I.E. if you started the week at level 4, and ended at level 9, you would be charged (4 + 9)2 x 500 = 3,250 for that week, and would start over for the next week with 9 as your base level for payment purposes. Characters who show themselves to be of extraodinary devotion/usefulness to the guild that their membership defers guild expenses, could have reduced, or even eliminated membership costs. Say Kebur is doing a really good job as Head of Matters of the Divine, making lots of members feel really good physically, emotionally, and spiritually. He might merit a reduced, or even eliminated guild fee.

Funds raised through membership fees and other such stuff would fund:

- A seperate message board (like the one in the tavern, not a new forum, silly) for the guild, to post notices of promotion, etc.

- Occasional/regular contests, raffles, tournaments, and suchlike, with prizes/rewards. Different themes, so there could be a warrior's tournament, to see who has the most combat prowess; a Cast-off, where spellcasters would compete somehow; maybe a stealing contest for the less lawfully-inclined types. ;)

- Player Housing, something along the lines of a single room, with a bed and persistant storage chest for each member, each with it's own unique key(mostly, the guildmaster/administration may have their own key to inspect quarters every so often, to inspect for stolen property, contraband if such rules be in place, etc.), so even the most humble adventurer can have his very own stash, provided they join. Once available housing is/appears to be becoming full, funds would be spend to add on additional rooms to make room for more members. (Additional linked areas, as Morrus has made it clear that it's hard to renovate the exterior of a structure in NWN)

- (A) Guild Merchant(s), who would stock/sell an inventory of weapons, armor, magic items, etc. that differs from that of NPC merchants. I.E. magic items that are unique to the guild, and possibly NPC Merchant-carried items may be sold at a reduced rate. To prevent a budget deficit, the merchant would not buy items, as it would drain funds and could possible bankrupt the organization.

- A deal with the local clothier to produce guild uniforms/neato clothing. I'm imagining a sort of base pattern for the entire guild, with perhaps different color schemes and such to differentiate talent designation(fancy-speak for class), rank(achieved, independant from level), etc. I.E. Silvers for warrior-classes(fighers, barbarians, paladins), reds for arcane casters(wizards, sorcerers), browns for nature casters(druids, rangers), blues for divine casters(clerics, paladins), blacks for stealth/skill classes(rogues),with mixes to differentiate special case classes and multiclass characters, I.E. a paladin or champion of torm would have mostly silver with a touch of yellow, bards would have a sort of black/silver/blue combo, rangers would be Silver with a touch of brown. Multiclass characters would have color schemes determined by their class ratio. I.E. a Figher 4 /Wizard 8 may have Blue with silver worked in, a Druid 12/Barbarian 4 would have Brown with a hint of silver, a Rogue 3/ Cleric 37 would have yellow only... You get the general idea.

- Maybe a montly drawing or tournament where the winner gets to commission an item to be custom made (specify, custom made, they'd still have to pay the cost of the item) to their specifications, within reason, at a time of their choosing. I.E. If a level 6 character were to win, they could comission a level 6-equivalent item of their desire, or wait a week, till they're higher level, say 9, 10 or so, and have it made then, at 10-equivalent, but with a slight increase in price, say 5% for each day that passes before the item is commissioned. OR they may option to set the item commision ticket(I guess you could call it that) aside for however long they wish before commissioning the item, but the interest added to the cost of the item would continue to rise 5% each day. Theoretically, a lvl 1 character could win, and wait until he's level 15 or so to commission the item, however long that takes, but may have to pay an extra 75% to have the item crafted. (or even more, the interest will not stop growing, imagine paying 800% interest to use that custom item ticket you won 5,6 months ago IRL!!). A character may alternately choose to, if they feel generous, give the ticket to a more needy character, or give it back to the guild in exchange for an additional few lots in the next drawing, if they don't want to use it now, and don't want to put up with the interest.

ALL of this, of course, would have to be ok'd by Morrus. And there's scripting to consider. But of course, Angcuru Ioneil would be guildmaster, since it was his idea, and he's something of a special case (just ask Elendiel or Bognar!) ;). (or at least have a reasonable position, should better management or ideas arise. :D )

Any ideas/comments, feel free to post them here, or E-Mail me. Well, i think I spent a good hour on this post, but I predict/hope that it will be worth it.

Obviously, you have given this a lot of thought!! :D
It's an interesting idea for sure.
My comments, in no particular order...

First off, it's funny you'd use Kebur as an exemple! Does that mean I will get an invitation? ;)

Well one of the things I have to mention is the weekly fee! It's IMHO very high!!! At my current level (13th), that's 6,500 gp!!! I barely make that much money in a week, provided I don't die and make good "money runs"... But the fee isn't all that important at this time ;)

Also, isn't by definition every PC an adventurer? I mean, as such, wouldn't everybody qualify? It might be interesting to have more specific organizations, like a Hunter's Club, a Thief Guild (with rogue-specific items and better prices on gems, secret shortcuts), an Order of Knights, etc...

Anything that involves, fosters, encourages role-play is a good thing, IMHO. I've spent many hours doing that, and don't regret it, ask Elendiel. (Knowing that during that time, a PC could gather a large amount of loot and XP.)

Titles, inside Quests and challenges are great, like "Running the Gauntlet" (going through a specific area, with a limited amount of time, or "naked" no items, or only basic ones), etc...)

PC-organized events would be nice (I for one would be interested) and I actually have one in mind, once (if) I get a chapel.

PCs having private rooms in the same building might help reduce the number of areas in the mod (I've read that as it gets larger, its stability diminishes). How much uses do the individual houses actually get? (I don't know, I'm asking.)

Well, that's all for now. Need to get back to work... ;)

Well, we're talking a whole week here, pay-wise. I had originally thought it would be acceptable to be 1,000 a week myself. But then again, Angcuru rakes in the money like you wouldn't believe. :p

But like I said, anything is subject to change. Maybe 200/lvl/week would be good, with additional voluntary donations accepted. Since not everyone is constantly playing, it makes sense that not everyone would have a hoard of gold stashed away.

At first I had this idea of a organization where every warrior-type PC would be eligible for membership. Sort of a Warrior's Guild of some sort. But then, the casters would feel left out. So I figured that if an all-eligible 'overguild' was in place, other, more exclusive guilds/organizations may take shape.

That's a valid point, Valn. I only really use my houses for persistant storage (the cottage) and crafting in the backyard(farmhouse). So if we've got crafting facilities available to everyone in the main building and a room/appartment/dormitory for each member, each with persistant storage, and perhaps more fancy rooms for those of more prestigious positions, then it would work out nicely.

I actually have a neat vision of Ascension eventually being overhauled, with the immediately nearby areas being absorbed into the town, with big buildings and stuff popping up, residential areas taking place, with actual commoner residents wandering around and stuff. Links to other modules, all that good stuff. Maybe we'd eventually rename it 'Ie'engard.' ;)
