Foundry 2024 D&D Token Rings… Help!

Hey folks. A question for the Foundry buffs out there.

It might be my OCD but I really want custom tokens I create to match the token rings in the new 2024 monster manual and 2024 Players Handbook.

Problem is I can’t find the ring anywhere. My google-fu is very weak on this occasion. What’s worse, I can’t reverse engineer the token ring because the new tokens are pop-out. So the ring is obscured.

Has anyone seen a ring only version of this deceptively simple ring anywhere? I hoped there would be one in the Foundry files but if there is, I couldn’t find one.

Please don’t just suggest using a different token. Of course I could do that, but then every time I dragged a base monster token onto the board it would be different and that would really grind my gears.

I'll apologize in advance if the style doesn't match, because I haven't picked up the new rules on Foundry and can't verify, but token stamp has a style in their drop-down selection of token rings that matched the official stuff when I used to use Roll20. There's even a foundry module integrating the tool so you can create tokens by using local images you have saved within Foundry. Good luck!

Im pretty sure it doesn’t match. I’ve used Tokenstamp for a long time, though I do use tokenizer now instead. Neither has the official ring as far as I can see.

I'm not sure what the situation is on v12 Foundry, but on v13 if you have any transparent image, it can assign a token ring for you.* This is how the 2024 Monster Manual assigns rings in Foundry so it should look identical.

If you want the actual token images and you host locally, you can find them in C:\Program Files\Foundry Virtual Tabletop\resources\app\public\canvas\tokens or similar (right-click the Foundry app on your PC and choose Open file location)

However, you will notice that all the token pieces are in one image and there are some weirdly colored bits, because the token is supposed to be constructed "dynamically" meaning it can be tinted, have a fancy background color, etc. With some image editing skills you might be able to use it manually.

If you are not using Foundry's D&D modules and instead use the DDBImporter module to import from D&D Beyond, there is an option to use Tokenizer to create the tokens, so I'm going to guess Tokenizer has the textures somewhere. You may want to ask on MrPrimate's discord if that is your situation.

*edit: non-transparent images also work, they just won't pop out and you may have to use the Subject Scale Correction setting

It’s so odd. You would think that the ring would be accessible somewhere in the assets if it is
automatically applying it.

That approach works because the mouse is a whole image. But if your picture is a torso for instance with a squared off bottom edge it’s going to look really weird overlapping.

It looks a little less nice, but I don't think this is something players are likely to notice or make a big deal about.

If you want to see how the Monster Manual token images are cropped to fit the rings, visit FoundryVTT\Data\modules\dnd-monster-manual\assets\subjects* to see them without the token rings, and assets\tokens to see them with rings.

*This is your Foundry data folder, the same place where you would upload things, if that helps you find it. You do need to be locally hosted to find this I believe.

I notice!

I’m pretty sure they use masking to make the tokens rather than cropping that’s why some elements are over ring and some neatly under ring.

I’ll reach out to Foundry direct I think.
