FR - Icewind Dale

Black Bard

First Post
Hello, fellow ENworlders!

I am planning an Icewind Dale 4E campaign and was wondering what are the good old sources of information regarding this specific piece of land.

So far, I have already "ressurrected" my Grey Box, Warrior and Rogues of the Realms (and the Cleric/Wizards couterpart), the 2nd Edition Boxed Setting and 3E FRCS, but I am pretty sure that any information I may find there will be sparse.

Thanks in advance.

Hello, Black Bard!

Looks like Volo's Guide to the North had a whole section on it - though that book's kind of hard to find now, especially since PDFs aren't for sale any more. Really, the best source is still probably going to be Salvatore's book trilogies - anything else can be made up by you, and I doubt you'll have much to contradict you. :)

Icewind Dale - The Forgotten Realms Wiki - Books, races, classes, and more
Ten Towns - The Forgotten Realms Wiki - Books, races, classes, and more

Two pages from the Forgotten Realms Wiki - it's possible more might exist at candlekeep.com, but I don't really know.

Good Luck! If there are any specific questions we can help you with, feel free to post them; I used to be a fan of the books and might know a few things off the top of my head.

Thank you very much, Henry!

The funny thing is that I owe a copy of Volo's Guide to the North, but I had completely forgotten!

Maybe I will try to revisit Salvatore's trilogies, but I am worried in having a bad "second trip"...

As for not having much to contradict me, the problem is one of the players is a Drizzt hardcore fan, so I must be well prepared!!! :D

Thanks again!

You would also want The North, the big AD&D boxed set on the North which also details Icewind Dale (plus assorted maps). I am pretty sure it was once available for free in electronic form in the Wizards archives.

Thank you very much, everyone!

I've just downloaded "The North" and "Savage Frontier" and unearthed my "Silver Marches" 3E book. I believe that will suffice.

By the way, I noticed that Wotc plans to launch an "Icewind Dale" Dungeon Tiles set in early 2011. Maybe we'll have an Icewind/Drizzt sourcebook soon?

It's possible, but it would certainly be a change in direction for the product line right now. Personally, I think the "Icewind Dale" name is just an evocative one they decided to attack to a tile set whose theme is "outdoors, but cold". The Dungeon Tiles line currently lacks (AFAIK) anything in the way of snow or ice tiles, and Icewind Dale is a D&D location they can use to sell tiles.

I also believe that the "Deserts of Athas" tiles are using a similar strategy to sell "outdoors, but desert" tiles.

Truth be told, the Icewind Dale region was always minor and sparsely detailed. There isn't much space there. Heck I'd say the CRPGs are better.
