[FR] Jhuild Question

My campaign is currently getting close to spending some time in the lands of Rasheman and Thay and I have a question (or two) regarding the Rashemaar's favorite beverage, jhuild (or firewine). In the FRCS, it mentions nothing more than they drink it and how much it goes for a tall glass. However in Lords of Darkness, it stats it out as a drug. Now, maybe it's just me, but it seems like the LoD version (called Thrallwine) is a bit different than my understanding of Firewine. If it is in fact the same, I'll shut up and color. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

the only other references i could find about fire wine are...

(Aurora's Whole Realm Catalogue pg 130) "Fire Wine: This thick, dark, almost black wine made in the Old Empires is named for the fire it creates in one's belly. Fire wine is an extremely strong and spicy wine, reputed to have medicinal qualities" (this may or may not be the Rashemaar variety)

(Spellbound p 73) "...the most highly valued [trade item] - Rashemaar firewine, which sells for 15 gp or more (depending on where it is sold) per pint in such places as Amn, Waterdeep and Cormyr." (pg 71) "[in berserker lodges across Rasheman, they] gather to sing, drink ale and jhuild (firewine), and tell stories of valor"

so it sounds to me like jhuild as a drug is a new thing...

Page 104 has at least 5 paragraphs about the drink, in the Spellbound book.

The drink is a drug (least I would say it would be according to 3E), that gives Rashemen different effects, some good, some bad.

Here's what was in that book.

XP Value: None
The dark reddish brew (not to be confused with the Old Empires drink called firewine) is made by the witches from grapes and fruits specially grown on plantations near the city of Urling, with various herbs added for increased potency. While it is not truely an enchanted item, its effects are certainly close.

Jhuild is generally considered to be the national drink of Rashemen. The land's berserkers are said to consume considerable quanties of firewine before going into battle, and it is said to both increase ferocity and bolster morale.

Each pint of Jhuild consumed has the following effect: It increases morale level of NPC's by 1 (maximum increase of 5), decreases wisdom by 1 (max decrease of 5, to a min of 1, and adds +1 to all damage rolls - all for 2d4 hours after consumption. These effects may be avoided with a successful Con roll, but the roll must be made for each pint seperately, and is at a cumulative penalty of -1 for each pint consumed.

Once the 2d4 hour perio has elasped, the drinker immediately falls into a deep sleep for 3d4 hours and awaked with a throbbing head, thick tongue, and a miserable desire to crawl under a rock. This is all considered part of the price the Rashemar pay for being the fiercest warriors in Faerun, and no one complains (at least not much).

Firewine sells for 1 GP per pint in Rashemen and at least 15 GP per point in other lands, with the price increasing the farther one goes from the land of the berserkers. A single bottle of Jhuild, containing about two quarts, is said to have brought 100 GP at an auction in Waterdeep, for example.

Be sure to also check the Lords of Darkness errata, as IIRC the description of that drug was changed at the last minute (not by me) into ... well, into something wrong. The errata fixes that.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but WotC hasn't released errata for Lords of Darkness yet.

Poop, I think you're right. I have just emailed myself a reminder to look at my copy of the book (I have it marked up with some corrections, and that's one of them) and post here the corrected version.

OK, found my original turnover and my markup of my copy of the book. Looks like the drug was changed more than I remember. So, here's what you do:

(1) Cross out the word "Jhuild" on pg. 183 of Lords of Darkness. Treat Thrallwine as a different drug that has nothing to do with Jhuild.

(2) Use the following for Jhuild (you'll also find this in the upcoming Unapproachable East book):

Name: Jhuild
Description: This dark reddish brew is made in Rashemen from certain grapes, fruits, and herbs grown near the city of Urling in Rashemen. It is a common drink for the wealthier berserkers native to that land.
Type: Ingested DC 12
Initial Effect: 1 point of Wisdom damage
Secondary Effect: The imbiber gains a +2 alchemical bonus to Strength for 2 hours.
Price: 70 gp
Side Effects: Once the Strength bonus wears off, the user must make a DC 20 Fortitude save or immediately fall unconscious for 3d4 hours. Whether or not the save succeeds, the user suffers a –2 penalty to attacks, saves, and checks for the next 12 hours.
Overdose: None
Addiction: None
