I'll see if I can find out where and with whom they served, but I suspect that you could probably find out, as well. You certainly can have something weird - I'd just like it to be something that's a documented unexplained, as many of the real events have already been assigned some significance in the secret history of the world, and so moving them about willy nilly sometimes makes more work for me than is necessary. And there's a lot more weird stuff out there in 1879 (and the years surrounding it) than airships... Very true - one of the reasons that Springer was called Maxwell, for a while. That being said, settled or not, the Maxwells probably aren't terribly fond of anyone settling on land that they own unless they buy it from them. Squatters and small-time ranchers just swooped in to take land from established grant owners all through this period - lots of the range wars in the west were fought over this very thing. He might have bought it out - if he had enough free funds, he probably could have bought it from the maxwells...but it also means he probably would have been on the other side of the Colfax county war. After all, what kind of insane rancher would he be to try to stop the railroad (the only place he could sell his cattle) from coming closer to home? Now, it's also entirely possible that he was a horrible rancher. Running a cotton or sugar plantation (or even tobacco) involves none of the same skillset as managing livestock in largely arid country. Farming and ranching can both be done, but they're not the same thing.... It's still perfectly reasonable for her to speak Apache...but she probably couldn't have learned it in the way you describe. Keep the skill point - just make a different reason to have it. I don't think they would have - Springer might have some circa 1879 as the Railhead is completed and presses on towards Santa Fe, but any sooner than that is unlikely. That's all fine - it just made it so certain parts of the story didn't add up. You tripped yourself up with too much detail. Sometimes, general is the way to go. In the Player's Handbook? Sure. But in real life? Even in 1879 a 15 year old girl isn't going to be spending a lot of time out on the range alone, no matter how capable. A 15 year old boy (alone) wasn't likely to survive, either, so it's not really a matter of sexism or social pressure. It's a dangerous place, where murderers and worse simply did as they please since the force of law rarely reached must past town limits. I like her adventurous spirit, and I think a lot of the events here are great and definitely useable - but it might be helpful to move some of them a little later into her life so as to make them make a little more sense. Everything else is still good. Just making little adjustments. :)
