Does anyone know any sites with free counters to use with D20 modern? So far I've found:
1.) http://userweb.suscom.net/~johna/ which has counters under DM stuff
2.) http://www.angelfire.com/rpg2/cateran which has an assortment, though mainly of vehicles.

I know Fiery Dragon Productions produced a set, but what can I say, I'm cheap. :D

Heh heh...maybe I shouldn't bother then, but I can't help it: I *must* plug the Fiery Dragon Modern counters. They are truly awesome. You get two pages just of superheroes alone...plus tons of monsters-in-modern-clothes (i.e. sneering goblins in hoodies, troll with machine gun, lots and lots of others), plus tons of PCs, of many differing types: cops, soldiers, doctors, martial artists, generic "punks", generic "tough guys", pulp adventure heroes...plus cars and motorcycles, plus tons of spiders, snakes, bats, dire wolves, vampires, Things That Must Not Be Named...

Dude, get over the cheapness. Trust me, you'll LOVE these counters. Well worth the $$$ (and they really aren't that much).

Disclaimer: I do NOT work for Fiery Dragons, nor are the bastards even paying me one lousy cent to plug their product! :p

I can't say the superheroes interest me at all, but in terms of the other types of counters, how many pages are devoted to each? The creatures are the most useful to me, especially in modern clothes. I might get over the cheapness, but free is so much more affordable. ;)

I'm not into superheroes either, but some of the "superhero" counters can be used for just about anything. One in particular that I like is this guy with a steampunk-style face mask (looks like a metal gas mask) wearing a fedora and trenchcoat...very Shadow/pulp heroish.

As far as page-to-type ratio, I can't say anymore, because mine are long cut up and stored in bins. ;) I just remembered thinking to myself, "Hey, sweet! They've even got two pages of *superheroes*! They've got everything!"

In total there are over 700 counters in there...

Just buy 'em! ;)

Hi, Wasgo!

Here's what is in Counter Collection 3: Modern:

Heroes & Ordinaries: 2 pages (140 counters, with just a few being multiples, like cops and soldiers... Plus you get a Piratecat, a Morrus and a Mike Mearls counter)
Vehicles: 2 and a half pages (SUVs, sedans, trucks, motorcycles, sports cars, vans, armored trucks and economic cars)
Animals: 1 and a half pages (horses, crocodiles, snakes, wolves, bears, apes, deynonichus, bats, cats)
Monsters: 4 pages (rotlord, bladefiend, festergog, genies, incubus, succubus, gray aliens, imps, demons and devils, tenacled things. Modern versions of bugbear, goblin, gnoll, kobolds, troglodytes, ogre, troll, vampires, snake-people, plus tooth faerie, zombies, skeletons and terrestrial effluvium, shadow denizens such as a dwarf guide, elf pattrollers, ant people, wyrm, fey)
Superheroes: Done by comic book master Jay "Tutenstein/Atomic City" Stevens, ranging from robots, giant robots, humanoid tanks and living egyptian statues to spectral people, skull-themed moths, a gang of bug-mobsters and half-wolf people).

All in all, it's over 700 counters for just $18.95, with Ennie-nominated quality! ;)

In a more horror bent, Fiery Dragon has just released Counter Pack 4: Eldritch Horrors & Occult Investigators as a PDF, available at RPGNow. Just go to www.fierydragon.com and follow the links there.

Oh, and thanks for the plugging, Johnny Freedom!

While the superheroes and vehicles don't interest me, the animals, monsters and aliens have a far greater appeal. I'll definately have to check it out.

Isint the art in those counters used illegally?

Don't know and don't really care that much either I'm afraid. I believe the art was obtained from the WotC website, but I don't really know their policy on it.

WotC, being the Kinder Gentler TSR, probably won't freak out seeing as they don't have a similar product on the market currently and it promotes the game. Dunno how WotC does their art copyrights, but they probably own the images, so it'd be their ball if they want to have a lawyer politely ask the guy to take them down.

Currently I'm thinking of trying Baize's idea for Shrinky-Dink minis.

Along with the site using WotC art on its counters, I've noticed a lot of sites doing "free counters" pilfer their art from older games. quite a few sites use images from counters from Car Wars and Villains & Vigilantes.
