Saw the movie Saturday and have to say that it was very good. I understand the book covers more of the pressure that the kids were under, including steroids, drugs, alcohol, etc., but I thought the story was far better without it.

Since I think most sports are a complete waste of time and the grown ups always put pressure on the kids to perform so they can live out some kind of has been sports fantasy, and the fact all jocks I know are a$$holes. I rated it a 1. If I could have rated it lower, I would have.

I fall pretty much into this camp as well. Though I criticize sports more on the basis that far too many kids think they can just go from high school sports into the Pro Leagues, so they don't bother trying to get an education especially if they have any talent. I remember seeing a fairly horrifying survay at one point that something like 90% of inner city kids who were on the high school basket ball team thought they had a good shot at making an NBA team. It shows at least that they can't do math given that there is what a thousand to maybe two thousand people who actually make a living playing basket ball in the NBA and several million HS students.

Wow, I'm sensing some very strong "jocks picked on me when I was in high school" and "the girls ignored me because I wasn't good at sports" vibes in this thread, with perhaps a touch of "sports are the pasttime of the unintelligent, gaming is much more sophisticated" thrown in. ;)

Naw, sports aren't the past time of the unintelligent. That's reading Tom Clancy novels... ;)

But seriously, do you actually expect gaming geeks to be fond of Jocks? Like a certain over muscled barbarian, they tend not to be very polite to anyone who doesn't fit into their group or anyone who doesn't fit their definition of a "Real Man".

Still smarting over that, are we?

And many gamers arrogantly believe themselves to be more intelligent and sophisticated than those who would rather play outdoors than spend their Saturday nights rolling dice in somebody's basement.

Both jocks and geeks have the potential to be jackasses. There are also individuals from both groups who are really great people. Heck, probably the single nicest guy I knew in high school was also a star football and basketball player, so forgive me if I don't jump on the "jocks are teh suxx0r" bandwagon.

Well, this isn't something I would disagree with, but it has nothing to do with the question I posed. You might also want to look up the definition of "tends to". It's not "are ALL" as you seem to believe.

BTW, were you never accepted among gamers since you were too much of a Jock?

I couldn't imagine a more biased opinion. Go see the movie before you vote next time.

Okay, to answer your question: No, I don't expect gamers to be fond of jocks, but nor should they be expected to go on bitter anti-jock rants whenever somebody mentions sports. That just smacks of an inability to cope.

Actually, throughout Jr. High and my Sophmore year of high school, I was a typical nerdy kid who would spend his free time reading and gaming. I would sneer at the jocks behind their backs and act like they were somehow holding me down. I was a smug, unhappy little man who believed that the popular kids were the source of all my misery.

My junior year I took up running and weight lifting, as well as playing sports for fun (although I still didn't join any of the sport teams). After a while, I found that I felt better, I looked better, my academic performace improved, and the girls actually started paying attention to me. I also learned that many of the jocks whom I'd conditioned myself to hate weren't such bad guys after all (although yes, a few of them really were jerks). I still gamed and read books, but no longer were they the only things I did in my free time.

Everything I need to know about it I have seen in the ads/ trailers. Everyone in this small town is not creative enough to go have have real lives, so they all live through how the local high school football team does. The jocks on the small town team get scared when they have to play the bigger team from the big city, so they have to band together to win. It also has a message from the parents of the kids, putting pressure on the kids to do good so they can go pro, and then not have to get a real job so the parents can have a meal ticket and retire.
