I am not much of a sports person but I am a bit of a fan of Billy Bob Thornton, and I must say, he did a good job of portraying Coach Gary Gaines. I saw it with my dad, he lives for sports (not to play but to watch) he absolutely loved it. My dad, having read the book says that it the best novel interpration movie he has ever seen.

IMO Colleges and other schools should be there so people can LEARN and gain knowlege in an acedemic way. Not so people can practice whatever sport they are playing for the team.
Why can't people do both? The VAST majority of student-athletes DO.

I have tryed sports, I was humulated and failed at all of the ones I tryed, so excuse me if I have a negitive view of all the meathead dumb ass jocks that have gotten a free ride in life.
Translation: "I suck at sports, so nobody else should be able to enjoy them either."

Just out of curiosity, KenM, have you ever heard of the concept known as sour grapes?

Let me tell you about my friend Brian. He was the starting goalie for the UC Berkeley soccer team. He's a real gentle giant off the field, but in front of the net he's a MONSTER. Some people think it's almost like he has a split personality, but his close friends agree that it's his way of blowing off steam.

Now, he got into Berkeley on a soccer scholarship, but he had the grades anyway - he's a sharp guy. His parents aren't exactly poor, but his scholarship was probably the difference between an academically lower-level state college and UCB. Why was it so important to go there? Was it the team? Nope, it was the environmental science department, one of the best in the country.

Brian graduated last summer with a B.S. in Enviromental Science and now works in environmental clean-up, including ridding local schools of asbestos. I fully believe somebody's not gonna get lung cancer because of my buddy Bri.

So I guess the question is, if a "meathead dumb ass jock" who's "gotten a free ride in life" can make the world a better place, what are you doing with your life?

I know this is a little off topic, but I did some research on asbestos for a project in college. Turns out the best way for people NOT to get cancer from it is to leave it where it was. Taking it out exposes the harmful things inside it to give you cancer.
What am I doing with my life? I've very happy working for my town, I have a good life and I treat everyone the way I want to be treated, unlike the majority of jocks I have met in my life. All my experence with jocks have been negitve, so excuse me if I have a negitve option of them. Thats my option, i'm entilited to it.

Wow, never had to add anyone on ENWorld to the ignore list... until now. For the record, I was in the marching band. Is there a problem with musicians too? Do professionals get paid way to much? Those students get scholarships too.

Ok, enough of hijacking the thread. I understand the book covers a lot more of the pressure that the kids were under to do well socially as well as on the field. I bet there were a lot of things left out from the final editing -
such as a female lead character - whatever happened to the girl the QB slept with?

It makes me curious enough to read the book.

Why does this thread make me think of The Breakfast Club?

BRIAN
'Cause I'm stupid...'cause I'm failing
shop. See we had this assignment,
to make this ceramic elephant, and
um...and we had eight weeks to do
it and we're s'posed ta, and it was
like a lamp, and when you pull the
trunk the light was s'posed to go
on...my light didn't go on, I got a
F on it. Never got a F in my life...
When I signed up, you know, for the
course I mean. I thought I was
playing it real smart, you know.
'Cause I thought, I'll take shop,
it'll be such an easy way to
maintain my grade point average...

BENDER
Why'd you think it'd be easy?

BRIAN
Have you seen some of the dopes that
take shop?

FWIW for those folks who liked Friday Night Lights, you might want to find a copy of Go Tigers! It's a documentary about the 1999 Massillon Ohio Football team, and deals with many of the same issues that Friday Night Lights covers. The primary difference is that Go Tigers! is the actual players, fans & townsfolk.

I have to second that suggestion. Go Tigers! is great movie. It delves more into the issues, and Ken is so outspoken about, like a couple of the players not keeping up academically. Overall, it's a great movie about a town's obsession with high school football.

If you were treating everyone the way you wanted to be treated, you wouldn't be so agressive against 'jocks'. I graduated from high school this past year and had to deal with all that crap with people think they're soooo much better than everyone else. And the best part of it all? Everyone focuses on the 'jocks', 'geeks', and 'band nerds'...but no one ever cared about us Artists. We were just weird. The funny thing was when people realized that most of the Art Students fell into all the catgories. Hmm...isn't that just possible that that happens with everyone? Like...hmm...jocks and geeks being the same person? I sure knew a few...
