The humane society is offering 17 adult black cats for a bargain adoption fee on Friday May 13 – thought to be an unlucky day by superstitious people.
The cats will be available for $25 each; the regular adoption fee is around $80. The fee includes a health check, spay or neuter, vaccination, de-worming and a microchip.
New owners can also consult the humane society's veterinarian for two weeks if they have any health concerns about their new pet.
The society says it's crammed with cats and needs to move them out fast. It takes care of more than 5,000 stray cats a year.
Vicki Burns, head of the society, told a city council committee in early May her organization is considering turning away cats after July 1, leaving the city pound to take care of them, or kill them.
Burns says the society is willing to continue doing its work, as long as it can charge the city for each cat it deals with.
