He is most often found in the shadows making no sound. There is an unnatural stillness about him. He watches from the shadows moving with great economy if at all. He almost moves one eye before the other as he scans his surroundings. He has the eyes of a hunter, a predator. Most notable is the tall leanness of him. His skin, what little is not covered, is a dark almost bluish gray. The face is shaded by the hood of a voluminous cloak in a pattern of horizontal black and gray tiger stripes. It reaches nearly to his ankles. Beneath the hood he wears a tight dark blue cap with a short bill. On the front of the cap a small fox emblem is pressed in dull brass. His face is angular with an enormously long upturned chin and high forehead. His ears are somewhat longer than a human’s, but not of elven proportion. He has only a stubble of bluish facial hair and long thick sideburns. His lips are thin and often curved in what appears to be a mocking half-smile. His clothes and equipment seem to be a bit of a mismatch. Taken individually they could be part of a uniform, but as a whole they form a chaotic mix. All bear the marks of use, but also careful maintenance. The trousers are charcoal gray and woolen with a slightly lighter gray stripe on the outside. Button down pockets bulge on his thighs. The pants are tucked into calf high boots of flat black leather with soft quiet soles. A keen eye can spot sheaths holding slim daggers balanced for throwing. The tunic is a somewhat lighter gray and different style from the pants. It has an irregular darker diamond pattern to the weave. Despite the padding of black fingerless gloves his hands are almost skeletal as they protrude from broad deep cuffs. The tunic is large and has a double row of buttons that climb to a high stiff collar. Over the tunic is a broad equipment belt supported by straps across his chest that while also black doesn’t quite match either boots or belt. A strange triple hook holds a spiked chain at his left hip and slightly to the rear, his cloak usually concealing the blued steel, which glows with an unearthly light. A small bucker hangs at the opposite hip with an ebony handled heavy mace. Pouches of various sizes and colors of black or gray and stuffed with gear line the belt and bandoleers. A quiver of forest green and brown is at his shoulder provide color in the mostly monochrome appearance. A few small bits of ribbon and metal on his left breast bare witness to a martial past in some far away place.

Pohl’s nature is in some ways as much of a jumble as his clothing. He has the chaotic spirit and restless impatience of his people tempered with a hunter’s passive calm in stalking or sitting a stand. Most often his impatience manifests itself in dealings with people or in an unwillingness to stay in one place for long. Despite the calm watchful exterior Pohl is usually eager for something, anything to happen. He thrives on the excitement of action. He has been in several battles and revels in the chaos and fog of war, where anything can happen and life is on the line. He speaks with a soft voice and communicates with the complex gestures of his people. This strange display of pantomime that accompanies his speech leads those unfamiliar with the ways of Shadowswyfts to question his sanity. For relaxation he enjoys playing the flute and composing free form tunes. He rarely plays popular songs instead improvising as he goes. His odd chaotic style rarely appeals to others, and his playing is not especially competent, but he plays for himself rather than others.

In his mercenary service his strong moral convictions and chaotic bent have led him to conflict with his superiors as well as the enemy. He doesn’t understand why his chaotic nature and restlessness cause others to remain somewhat aloof from him. He is a social loner. Despite this he knows the value of working as part of a team when in harm’s way. Pohl prefers to stay in the Shadows and attack from surprise and range. He uses his speed to attack with surprise or retreat and regroup for a ranged assault. He prefers to avoid direct confrontation when he can attack from the safety of the shadows.

History/Background

Pohl comes from a clan of Shadowswyfts that currently reside on the Astral plane on a floating fortress. This particular Shadowswyfts are descended from the same long lost race of humanoids that gave rise to the Githyanki and Githzeri. Unlike the people who would later take the name of Gith, these people were never enslaved by the mind flayers. Instead they escaped to the plane of Shadow. There they mingled with natives and with generations of intermarriage became a mix of humanoid and shadowperson. They discovered they had a knack for spying and infiltration. They used this gift as a source of income hiring out as mercenaries in far flung places using the Well of Worlds they had once used to escape enslavement by the mind flayers. Pohl clan received and Astral Fort as spoils and payment for a contract and have settled there for the time being. Pohl has traveled to distant places working as a mercenary scout and archer. He has been fairly successful and enjoys his work, but rarely stays with one army long. He soon becomes restless and moves on always seeking new adventures. Since coming to the Astral his people have come to the attention of local Githyanki who recognize the common ancestry of the Shadowswyfts. They resented the fact that Pohl’s people had fled the mind flayers were never enslaved. Open hostility broke out and there have been battles. Pohl lost an uncle and brother to the Githyanki and harbors considerable hatred for them. He carries a spiked chain of Githyanki make that he took off the body of Gith leader he killed.
