G4 Tv

I looked for the old thread didnt see it concerning G4 soo..

My cable company added G4 to the lineup. My question is whats the deal? What good to watch on this channel?

My first unfortuante experience Tuesday with G4 was a review show featuring Victor Lucas and Tommy whats his name. They used to do a show on vid games on the science channel(?) I used to watch. Not only do I hate these guys-they do too much cheesy chatter-trying to be "characters". To add insult the show seemed to be a rerun they were reviewing things from months ago.

From what Ive seen, it seems G4 is a low rent version of Mtv-all about video games with little real content and with little of MTv's style. Although Arena seemed funny- I thought I was a geek till I saw some of the contestants :)

Anyway I welcome opinions recommendations. There has never really beem a good TV show devoted to gaming. Tech TV's Extended Play was good since the games got all the attention there was precious interstitial stuff where the presenter tried to make himself too much of "personality". That was until it became X Play and added Morgan Webb- now it seems cheesier. Sigh I just wanna hear about games.

I have G4 on for a few hours every day, so I'm familiar with the channel's content. Here's a few things to remember:
  • This channel just passed its first anniversary on the air, so they are still working out the kinks.
  • As a young channel, there's a hideous amount of repeats over a given week. This was really bad until just after the first of this year; now there is regular new content added to the channel.
  • The shows to watch are: Pulse (weekly newsmag, new shows on Friday evenings), G4TV.com (weekly chat show, pairs with Pulse, new episodes every week), Arena (Clan-on-Clan LAN gaming, still suffering from host turnarounds, regular but not frequent additions), Cinematech (FMV show w/ a variety of themes; my favorite show on the channel; regular content additions) and Cheat! Pringles' Gamer Guide (cheat code show).
  • The shows to avoid are: Portal (MMORPG show that acts like a soap opera), Judgement Day/Electronic Playground (both shows featuring Victor Lucas, doing some reviews of games and products; can get better coverage in print and online and without the annoying co-star/producer Tommy Tallawhatsits), Players (celebs being annoying gamer geeks; recent ones are oh-so-slight improvements).
  • Take Or Leave: Filter (well done count-down show w/ a cute host; it's the host and the presentation that sell what would otherwise be a sucky show), Sweat/Blister (a sports and action gaming pair of shows that do reviews and previews of games in their genre focus; the former's hosts are okay, while the latter's is an annoying twat; shows are okay, but skippable).
  • G4's official website is worthy of bookmarking if you want to get into one or more shows; the online broadcast schedule alone is worth it out of sheer convience but the forums suffer from bad moderation--as in, not enough--and an overload of bad avatars and .sig files (both are way excessive). The chat room is a big way to connect with G4TV.com and Filter relies on its online Filterater for its show content.
  • G4's infuence is already huge and growing very fast; print mags and game publishers adopted the network early on and are big on exploiting it for their ends, which G4 is happy to allow for it justifies G4's existence. G4 exists to bring gamers to publishers as consumers to advertisers; this is not necessarily a bad thing.
  • Ronilyn Reilly is hot. ;)

I turn to this channel every so often. I like the Cheat show but I don't watch it very much because the reviews and the game they are showcasing are out already.

I also like the Portal show about the Online games, but I am addicted to EQ and slowly getting into SWG.

I'm not that impressed with the channel so far. They are far to hung up with Console games, and don't cover PC games often enough. One show was raving about how great the graphics for the new... 3d Zelda game was... sheeze... the graphics on that thing are awful! I still don't know what they were thinking. Maybe it was just the specific show I was watching (I don't remember what it was).

Cool thanks for the info all. I look out for those shows Corinth. The one thing Im looking forward to, if they do this is to see games in action, whether its demos or pre release videos-the kind of stuff you usually only see online or at shows like e3. I actually like cinemateche(sp?) since they show game intos/cutsscences/ demos.

But man I hate Victor Lucas and Tommy whatshisname. I know Victor was an editor or somethign with EGM or the publishing company that runs it and that Tommy is sort of a big shot game music composer, but man as hosts they are sooo irritating. And its all about them and their stupid banter.

Anyway end of rant, thanks again.

The graphics are amazing in the new Zelda game. Have you played it? And for console players (which there are many) that is a good thing. I'm sure they'll add more PC coverage eventually. I'm told by a friend (take that as you will) who watches it all the time that the mix is pretty good as he is primarily a PC gamer...

I have to back up John on this one are really good. Anyone who says other wise is either doesn't like the style (not the same as being bad) or just hasn't seen the game in person much less played it.
