Gama Trade Show

Any news from anyone that attended the GAMA trade show? It was thought there would be some big announcements this year.

Anyone hear about how the "competitor" trade show went?

There were no BIG announcements at GAMA this year, other than Green Ronin getting the license to do a Song of Fire and Ice True20 game. WotC showed samples of the Transformers 3D Collectible game, and WizKids demoed the Star Wars Pocket Game.

As I understand it, Game Expo did not attract enough retail stores and the company that put it on is now out of business.

Yup, one of the managers of my FLGS told me that the big news being discussed was WotC pulling the Dragonlance license (and Dragon/Dungeon) and exactly what that meant.

I don't think it's been decided that Green Ronin will utilize the True20 system for A Song of Ice and Fire.

We had the first advance copies of the Aces & Eights: Shattered Frontier RPG (June release) at our booth, and reception from distributors and retailers was extremely positive. At least one of the major distributors told us that the time we took to release the game was time well spent, and that he thinks we're probably going to sell out fast and have to reprint.

Unfortunately, there don't seem to be many blogs or news sites reporting on GAMA, but the couple I have seen were very positive.

There really weren't any big announcements this year. It was a rather quiet, workaday show. The Dragon/Dungeon/Dragonlance announcements hit just before the show, and there was a little buzz about those, but it was subdued.

Green Ronin's announcement about A Song of Ice and Fire was the big one; note that it is not going to be a True20-based product, as Chris Pramas has mentioned that they will develop a whole new system for the game in order to take into account the nature of the story.

The biggest news, really, was the return of Avalon Hill's Titan through Valley Games. I've no idea how they got the license, but for board gamers, this is like the holy grail of "games we'd like to see re-published."

There were some other minor announcements; you can check my reports on GamingReport.com for more information, but really, there's not much...

Oh, and as Mark said, Kenzer & Company had Aces & Eights at the show. I wanted to grab a copy and run off, but those guns they had seemed a little too real...

I wonder why that is? EN World has fallen off on reporting unless something is submitted directly. Gamingreport has the same affliction since it was bought out. There's not much else out there for serious P&P RPG news, I guess. Maybe Ogre's Cave and Board Game Geek?

Huh. I wonder if they managed to streamline it so games didn't take a week to play. We used to love that game until everyone got pretty good at it, then it seemed to bog down.

My report/blog is here: http://web.mac.com/jollybgood/iWeb/Jolly_Blackburns_Website/Blog/Blog.html

Admittedly it's more my POV of the show as seen from behind our booth...

But you're right. I was hoping to come home and read reactions from others who were there.

Reports are few and far between.

Speaking of GAMA, I have a bit of a silly question for folks who are exhibitors there. What exactly do you do at this show? Do you sell stuff? Demo stuff? Give stuff away?

I ask because I am going to be working with someone who is going to possibly be an exhibitor there next year, and I really want to know what I am getting myself into with this. I would hate to go to the show with flawed expectations of what we'll do.
