If you want to try something very different from D&D, check out My Life with Master from Half-Meme press. It's a short, interesting read, and it plays well as a break from a years-long campaign. Cthulhutech, as mentioned above, is a fun read too. Mecha + cthulhu, with a "logical" explanation for mecha based on the arcanotech of the Strange Aeon. I haven't played it. But I have heard that you need to be careful to make sure the PCs are compatible with each other - a mecha pilot, a sorcerer, and a tager don't have the same sort of missions and it might be difficult to run a campaign where they all participate. But if you do focus the characters, I can see the game going in all sorts of fun directions. I don't think anyone's mentioned Exalted yet. It's sophisticated anime where the characters are all godlings. I know you wanted "cool game systems" recommendations, and actually I can't vouch for Exalted on that score, personally. But I do have friends who love it, especially for the setting. And while the rules aren't my cup of tea, a lot of people really get into the mechanics and character optimization for combat. I have to get a plug in for my game, too. If you can wait 'til August, I recommend Spellbound Kingdoms. It's a Renaissance RPG with zeppelins, wheel locks, rapiers, and sorcerous thought police. Check it out in the sig!
