Game Talk Radio Anyone?

Hello gents and ladies,

I've got the potential for a unique opportunity here, and I wanted to see what you all thought of it before going ahead. In addition to my freelance writing and webmastering, I'm still a full-time college student at the University of Tennessee. One of the nice things about being at UT is that our college of Communications is very good, and as a result we, as students, have our own radio station completely operated and staffed by the student body.

I've been talking to the programming director at our radio station (WUTK) about the possibility of hosting my own radio talk show. The idea is to do a show about roleplaying games, similar to how other college stations have shows about comics, movies, etc. One of the nice things is that, in addition to broadcasting all over the city of Knoxville, WUTK has a RealAudio feed that can be heard anywhere in the world if you have an internet connection. The basic premise would be to spend a chunk of the beginning of the show recapping the gaming news of the week and offering reviews of some major products, then have a guest on the show from the industry (if not in-studio then over the phone) for a while, and maybe call-in discussion after that. The show would only be an hour long, once a week, and would air late night (probably around 11 PM Eastern/8 PM Pacific) so as to avoid the prime-time college radio listening crowd.

So, my question is this. Assume for a moment you're a local gamer that would be able to listen to this on your radio. Would you? And now, since most of you aren't local, would anyone listen over the RealAudio stream? I'm just trying to figure out whether or not it would be worth it to spend my time putting someting like this together. Any other feedback you might have would be great, too.

I used to be a regular listener of Mortality radio (www.mortality.net), but when my wife changed jobs, friday nights became much more important to us, and I was unable to listen except to download the shows after the fact.

Strangely enough, 11PM easter time would be ideal for me, because that's when I am most free on weeknights (except for friday night slots). So, if you were to do it, AND if it were to be 11PM on a non-weekend night (not friday or saturday), then I guarantee you would grab me for at least a month, while I figured out if I liked the show enough to keep listening. :)

Well, I'm not trying to compete with Mortality in any way. The main difference is that this show is going to be broadcast over the actual airwaves here in Knoxville. I'm going for local radio, with the internet broadcast more of an add-on.

I think it sounds kind of neat. Though I guess it would depend on the time as to if I would tune in. But would the school greenlight a project that has such a narrow listening audience?

Moridin,
You go to UT? That's cool...I live in Greeneville. Sundays are my gaming night, and we usually play until midnight or 1 in the morning...if you broadcast around 11 or so, I'd pull you up on Real Player.

I guess it would depend on the size of the gamer community in your area. College radio gives you an opportunity to do lots of crazy things. One guy at my school did a weekly show with nothing but video game music.

You can do it!

And...make sure they are available for later download.

One of the funnest things I did in college was to DJ and later become station manager of the college radio station.
