It's pretty much the norm. The same thing is happening on Roll20 for example, so it's not "just" the medium. I also see a lot of people there trying strategies to keep games going that I've seen here over the years like over recruiting and then hoping you're left with 4 or so consistent players after the bit. A lot of my games have eventually floundered, though usually I have a good year at least. There are some days I completely forget to even think about PbP. There are days I put off a post because it's not very consequential and I'm hoping there are more replies so I have more to build off, other days it seems like there's almost too much to reply to. I've seen games focus on the long form RP because the combat mechanics of table top don't work nearly as quickly when people are posting once per day. I've seen and done rules changes to try to adapt for that. I think a lot of stuff that's now in the PbP FAQ needs to be re-written as it was based a lot on some people's predispositions in a different era and doesn't hold to always be true. Always keep in mind what your actual goal is playing or running the game. If your goal is the really long form long term game the first goal is participant buy-in. If you want a game to run for years, everyone needs to have the same goal and be willing to make the necessary sacrifices to make it happen. And not every game has to be about that. My "escape" game was meant specifically to be short, for good or ill. But I was clear up-front about that.
