The Gamex convention in Los Angeles was a rocking good time over the Memorial Day weekend. The con had great attendance - much better than previous years, and games filled up quickly.
Some personal observations:
1) I was stunned by the huge Vampire LARP attedance. I heard there were over 100 people on Saturday night including the LARP GMs and their assistants. That's freaking amazing! RPGs were filling up left and right with most games having an alternate or two - even Friday night! Woot! That's what you get when you have Paul Tevis leading the charge!
2) The Classic D&D Tournament was a blast. I ran three sessions and the Friday night team was victorious...at the very last second. I will be posting a "How to Win RPG Tourneys" thread giving more details.
3) The IPR booth was getting great attention with many gamers seeing these small press games for the first time. Too bad they didn't take credit card which means I have to wait for Gateway in September to pick up Cold City and Agon and Dictionary of Mu.
4) I did not get to talk to Jay Tummelson of Rio Grande Games and it was a bummer that John Wick could not attend, but I did get to chat with the producers of The Fellowship of the Dice movie. Wow, they did a full length feature on $25k and it looks like much fun. If anyone attended their special screening, let us know what you thought!
5) Got to play Buffy with a Crazy Nick which was a hoot. Nothing says twisted like mixing Clive Barker with Jon Benet conspiracy theories right before prom night!
6) You can find better food choices by walking an extra two blocks. Not amazing food choices, but better. I will never understand why "good chow near LAX" seems to be an oxymoron.
7) My playtest events for Space Blade went off much better than expected. I got some great feedback notes. Thank you to all who volunteered as guinea pigs to try out a game that's still gestating.
8) Got to play in Tom Cumming's new Cthulhu setting: Resurrection City which takes play in 2027 in an unpopulated LA where there is a huge tower into the sky that may be a stairway between heaven and hell. Meanwhile people from all eras who were murdered are returning. They are awakening in groups in hotel rooms with a 9mm in front of them. Much weirdness, much fun. Looking forward to Tom doing more with this setting.
