Gaming Fans Absolutely Blow My Mind - A Rant

I sometimes think I liked the world better when I was more naive.

The world wasn't any better, just your view of it. There's a reason the expression "ignorance is bliss" was coined. It's easier to eat the sausages before you saw them being made.

I know that. I don't like how it has changed me from a more optimistic person who really believed that one day man would evolve to be more like the people in Star Trek.

Now I am more cynical and believe that mankind will never overcome its tribalism that we will probably be killing each other over perceived differences until the day the sun burns out.

I'm starting to suspect that all the normal people know to not voice opinions strongly, mind their own business, and not force their views on other people.

Hopefully, they are a majority of society.

The problem is, the rest of the people don't have such respect and are quite happy to shout everybody down, bully others and deploy bombs in crowded places.

You'll notice, it's never normal people assassinating anybody or blowing up bombs for causes they casually believe in. It's always people who super believe they are right and everybody else is wrong.

Before the internet got so big I was really naive. I really thought that most people had some intelligence and the ignorant ones were in the minority I also thought most of my fellow Americans were decent compassionate people.

Not anymore judging from a lot of the posts I read there are a lot of really ignorant people out there. They have no basic knowledge of history, science the humanities it blows my mind.

There are also a lot of mean spirited nasty people out there far more than I thought.
If it makes you feel any better, there's a selection bias at play here. Loudmouth ignoramuses are going to be overrepresented on any open comments thread because well-mannered, soft-spoken types aren't going to be as inclined to post.

Don't worry, Elfwitch, we'll have killed ourselves off long before the sun burns out.

:hmm:

I joke. Kinda.
cheers all.

PS: a fine rant in the OP.

Never read the comments.

But this reminds me of a story. I was sitting in the first session of a critical thinking class last year, hoping to move from the waiting list to the enrolled roster. Our first in class assignment was to read through the comments on a news article and write down a few sentences about what we thought about some of the answers.

Thankfully, I found another critical thinking class in the psychology department.

You must have never read an article discussing race on the internet. That comment is small potatoes. You see a racial or politically charged article on the internet and you will see comments about a hundred times worse that truly let you know how anonymity affects discourse.

The cheerioes, they have been urinated in. There is a turd in the fruit punch bowl.

I can understand why seeing the negativity of the fans can annoy people.

Crying about other people crying is not the way to solve that problem.

Putting out great material, having solid discussions about the material, and sharing fond memories of what made the game great to you, are.

In speaking of fans, make no mistake, this is fan behavior, not gaming fan behavior. Ask questions about Doctor Who, Star Wars, Star Trek, Windows, Spider Man, Superman, or any bit of media with some history behind it and learn the woes of "jumping the shark" even when that jump produced new fans and favorites.

Positive output is the key, not complaining about the complainers.

Again, I realize that this is hardly isolated behavior.

However, I do believe that by simply ignoring it, it becomes somewhat condoned, or at least tolerated. I do fully agree with the idea that positive output is the key. But, by the same token, I think that as a group, we should condemn this sort of thing whenever it crops up.

I dunno. I guess I'm getting worked up about not all that much. It's just something that hits all my buttons at the same time. And, yes, it does the same regardless of the topic. But, just as a point Celtavian, this wasn't a discussion site. This was a news site and even the question asked wasn't really asking for criticism of one edition or the other.

This was drive by edition crap that just makes everyone look bad.

If someone does this on En World, ok, fine, this is a site for discussing stuff. But, I guess I just don't get the mindset that says, "Hey, they're saying something nice about something I don't like, I better make sure the entire world knows I don't like it!" It just boggles my mind.

Because those people are wrong. And I'm going to tell you how!

Or could be a bit of the ole sitting around the table randomly bitching but that game table is now the internets.
