Gamma World

Say, I'm slowly getting back in to Gamma World (after watching the Omega Man last weekend, to be honest). Reading through the d20 stuff, but also found a lot of the original versions available from sellers online (including enworld!). Any suggestions about how to run the campaign or pros-and-cons of the d20 version?

Get ready for a firestorm by the fans of the older editions- the PH was recieved very poorly and I agree for the most part. The one thing I like about it, unlike many, is there is no setting for it. It was meant to be a toolbox for setting creation and the GMG and Beyond the Horizon does that very well (the other books are of varing quality).

For example settings and other stuff (generally rules light): http://alternityrpg.net/onlineforums/index.php?showforum=12

and for more than GW:

I'm in a d20 Gamma world game, and the D20 rules are working out just fine. The trick is to treat the Books as the tool kits that they are, like d20 Modern is, and use the parts you like, and discard the parts that you don't.

Last night, we finished the old Gamma World module Legion of Gold that has been running intermittently for over 10 years. We used the Omega World rules. It was good. I really like OW as a rules set for "Gamma World d20 done right." I used OW to run the adventures from Alternity Gamma World a couple of years ago. Great fun.

There was little that I liked about the D20 edition of Gamma World. There is a really good D20 Post Apocalyptic game out there though: Darwin's World 2E. It's great. A bit darker in scope and feel, though. I would pick it up and then use setting information from whichever edition of GW you like. It's worked great from me these last few years.

Kane is exactly right. Darwin's World is quite a bit better than the current Gamma World offering.

It is a great game. But it is very, very bleak... so bleak that I don't the world would survive the setting the game puts forth. I think a GM would have to ramp back the harshness of the world for it to be playable...
