Last year, we did a "Create your own RPG" contest. The idea was, you had a little over a month to produce a complete RPG that adhered to a list of themes (last year, the theme was "magic", so they're pretty broad). It was a very open, collaborative project - with everyone evaluating their competitor's work and offering helpful advice. I was wondering how many people were interested in a repeat of last year's contest? Some thoughts: * There would be a "theme", as in last year, as well as a few sub-themes that can be used or discarded as the RPG author wishes. My plan is to list about five themes, and twenty sub-themes, and randomly determine them. * I would do the judging myself, based on a criteria I would release before writing began. That being said, I'd also be working on a project of my own - it just wouldn't be submitted in the actual contest portion. * All projects would have to begin on the contest start date (probably January 1st) - you can't dig out "that old RPG I designed in the 80s" and submit it. * the game must have fairly complete mechanics, and can't be simple re-writes of other systems. And you can't, for example, just say "this game uses 3e OGL rules, please see the hypertext SRD for game rules.... here's what I do differently!" * Authors would have a month to get the project done. I'd recommend everyone post teasers of their projects weekly, though - even a table of contents or a few character classes can be a fun way to drum up discussion on your project. * This would be an open design challenge - with a sense of community and collaboration, instead of hard-core competition. No one is going to mock you for your product. * There will be (as of yet) no prize for first. But if someone is willing to donate something, that'd be awesome.
