Having checked the books, I now feel I have educated myself enough to comment: That would not be my interpretation, as the description of the Arcane Channelling ability makes no mention of it. As such, I would require a free hand, or the Still Spell feat. Again, my interpretation differs. (It should be noted, however, that in both cases I'm only stating my interpretation of the rules - not making any special claim to validity.) The PHB makes no mention of this. It does state that you can hold things in that hand, but not make attacks. That would suggest to me that you cannot do so. I would, however, allow it with a Buckler. Note that the FAQ has addresses this (or perhaps it was the Sage in Dragon): his ruling was that readying the weapon from that position would require a move action, or the Quick Draw feat. (Personally, I disagree, and ignore that ruling IMC. However, it is relevant, so I thought best to mention it.) If Animated shields are available at the standard availability, then go with the two-handed weapon. Otherwise, it seems to be a trade of. It's also worth noting that the more generous the stat generation method used, the more the scales seem to shift towards the two-handed weapon (and also away from heavy armour in general). At standard 25-point buy it seems to be about equal, at least until those Animated shields show up.
