Gelatinous cube question

Hello
The gelatinous cube can 'Engulf' its enemies : they are grabbed, dazed and take ongoing damage. The cube can move with the creatures inside with no problem.

Can other monsters attack the PC engulfed without damaging the Cube ? Does it depend on melee, ranged or area attack ?
And do the other PCs hit their engulfed ally when they try to damage the cube ?

Unless there is text in the description of the Cube that contradicts it, I'd say that engulfed PC's can't be attacked by other monsters, but also that other PC's can attack the cub without risking hitting their friend.
