From the 1st to the 12th of this month Monsters and Memories did their longest open beta test so far. It's an old-school inspired MMO that borrows heavily from games like EverQuest. I hopped on for the second week and played a Gnome Elementalist up to level 5. It's... Okay... I think it's shown me that my love for EverQuest and what keeps me logging a few hours a month on Project Quarm is more nostalgia than an actual enjoyment of the game. I think I may have also just gotten tired of MMOs. Grinding for the sake of grinding just doesn't do it for me anymore, especially in a game like this where it's very directionless. In modern MMOs you at least get the quest of "Go kill 10 spiders because of insert story hook here" and you have some sort of progression to watch. This is, much like Classic EQ, "I'm killing 48 spiders because that's how much experience I need to level up. Aw crud, I'm out of spiders, I guess I can kill these rats, but they're lower level so they're worth less xp." A lot of people are really loving it though, so I'm happy for them. I may check out a future beta.. Supposedly they're putting in an underdark type zone and adding Deep-Elves/Gnomes/Dwarves.
