From a gentleman who has been gaming for many years comes a product that truly shows his experience in the trenches--CMG's Lexus - Dwellings Volume I. As anyone who has ever run a city campaign can tell you, it's often a rather difficult experience running a game in a big city, especially if your players wander off the beaten track. Perhaps the hints you're giving them just don't lead then back to the meat of your adventure in the city's underworld, and instead the party wants to investigate a noble's villa--one that you really never bothered to flesh out. With this generator, your problems are reduced greatly--it can describe the house for you while you try and nudge your party back in the right direction. While the product would be best put to use in the hands of a "laptop GM," even those who game with purely pen and paper will find it useful; the only thing required is a bit of extra preparation by printing out a few randomly generated descriptions. This generator is really just an HTML file of three main frames, the title and instructions, generator options, and the actual description. A single click on one of the discriptors (i.e. type of dwelling, features and furniture etc.) generates the descriptions you want. As a gamer who is now rabidly supportive of gaming with a PocketPC, I will add that the three-frame format that this generator uses does not work on a small PPC screen--only two of the frames show up. In speaking with Mark, however, he said he would be very willing to mess around with some formatting to make it work on a PPC-size screen. Aside from the slight compatibility issue with a PocketPC, this is truly an excellent product, and I heartily recommend it to anyone who ever needs to quickly generate a building or furnishings for their games. Not to mention it's $3.00 pricetag, which is an absolute bargain for how useful this is.
