Generic classes from UA weaker than standard classes?

Question

First Post
Is it just me or is it impossible to replicate standard classes with the generic UA classes? It seems to me that even if you try to do it as close as possible you end up with a class weaker than the standard one.

Probably true. You probably wouldn't do it for power reasons. You would do it if you wanted to combine different facets of different classes but not use multiclassing. Or especially if you wanted to cast from a unified spell list.

And the use of generic classes is supposed to be a wholesale substitution in the way all classes are handled and not treated as an "extra" set of classes to choose from.

It is part of the design of the system as a whole - so while they are most likely "weaker" than the standard classes they are balanced with themselves because all classes are treated that way.

You can make a really powerful Fighter/Rogue with a Warrior/Expert, since you don't have to give up your sneak attack progression, since it's based on hide and move silently ranks. Otherwise, they are indeed weaker.

I would also say that the Expert is significantly weaker than the Warrior, and should probably have 2 extra skill points/lvl (quadrupled at 1st), and 2 extra class skills.

You can even prove this with Buy the Numbers, a product that lets you "pick and choose" character abilities instead of having classes at all, and thus let's you compare classes by picking what the class has and totalling up the cost.

I was hoping that generic classes were a way to design custom classes actually.

Does anyone have a suggestion as to a system to do that?

True20 - I ordered my book and by this time next week (after my paycheck and all that jazz ;)) I'll have my copy of it.

Basically, it's a portable, setting neutral, alternative d20 system just waiting to invade the market. And it's by Green Ronin, which is fast-becoming one of my favourite non-WotC publishers :)

Check it out ;)

Yes, the perfect answer to a question he didn't ask.

I like True 20, but that was not the point of his question. Rather like asking 'will it rain tomorrow?' and getting the answer 'it is snowing in Alaska.'
