generic module recommendations

First Post
I'm looking for some generic adventure modules to use in an upcoming campaign. What do I mean by generic? I mean a module that is light on background and generic in its fantasy (ie- no guns, standard D&D paradigms in place). Something that I can fit into a campaign with as little work as possible.

As an example, I just picked up Idylls of the Rat King by Goodman Games. This is just what the doctor ordered. With just enough background to make things interesting, it is mainly a good dungeon that can be plopped down in any world.

Now what are some other good ones like this?

I'm quite aware of what companies make D20 products. Not everything that these companies make is a gem or is what I am looking for. What modules do you recommend?

Hmmmm...is there any specific elements you're looking for (such as certain kinds of plots, specific monsters, character level, etc.)?

Generally, I've used a lot of the free PDF adventures Wizards' puts on their web site. They tend to be short and some are much better than others, of course, but they have a good range of levels, plots, locations, monsters, etc. Usually there isn't much in the way of background either - sometimes the authors use GH or FR place names, but they don't normally use the history, special rules or NPCs from those settings. There's a monthly column, too, called Vicious Venues that is basically a short, detailed encounter or location with some plot hooks.

There are also a couple of books that I've liked a lot. _En Route_ is simply locations/encounters/NPCs with short plots, not necessarily full-fledged adventures, but it might be worth a look for you. I liked the _Book of Taverns_, too, because the tavens are very well written and there are great backgrounds for NPCs that with a little work would make good plot hooks. Neither of these are campaign specific and use "standard" D&D-style fantasy elements.

Old school dungeon-bashes 'eh...

You may want to consider the Banewarrens, City of the Spider Queen, Necromancer Games' Rapan Athuk, Necropolis, The Tomb of Abysthor...

There are a lot of good 1st ed and 2nd ed modules if you are willing to do some conversion...

Cheers,

A'koss.

I second A'koss' suggestions.

Virtually everything from Necromancer Games would be up your alley. I'm particularly fond of:
- Rappan Athuk 1-3
- Vault of Larin Karr
- Tomb of Abysthor
- Necropolis

What level?

Dungeon mag always has good crawls. We're playing dungeon #88's "The Sevent Arm" by Tito Leati. September/October 2001.

The scenario is good (and I'm picky if you've read any of my Dungeon adventure reviews here), and makes a nice dungeon crawl for levels 3-11, but made specifically for 7th level characters.

I'm doing a review on it today. Watch for it.

Dungeon #88 can be ordered from paizo for $10.

That issue also contains:
The Door from Everywhere by Roger Moore (6th; levels 3 and higher adaptable)
Thirds of Purloined Vellum by Grahm Scott (levels 1-7; a highly acclaimed scenario FORGOTTEN REALMS but easily adpated to your home game)
"Make it Big" by Jeff Quick (5-13; side trek)
"The Seventh Arm" by Tito Leati..as listed above (3-11th level)
