Genie in a Bottle, Or portable Home

Take one Bottle or Lamp, add losts of magic and you get:

Plush living space with the ability to store a limited amount of equipment and belongings. The ability to come and go as you please by turning to a gaseous form and either entering or leaving the device through the neck. While inside the device, you have no need for food or water, although time passes normaly. Disadvantage of inconvienience, if someone stoppers the bottle, you cannot get out. It is limited to holding 1500 lbs. of matterials and is intended for only one person to reside within.

Prerequisites: Mordenkainen's Magnificent Mansion, Leomund's Secret Chest, Gaseous Form. Construction cost: 75,000gp

Items this is similar to are a bag of holding which at 10,000gp can hold 1500 lbs. and the Daer's Instant Forterss which makes a small tower for 55,000gp

The differences here are that someone could reside inside the bottle while it is carried by another party member. However it cannot be used to defend a mountain pass, although it could be hidden under a bush for a quiet night beside the road.

Is this price for such an item to high or too low?

If it comes with Barbara Eden, its so a bargain.

Its hard to put a price on something like this but 75k is definately not too much.

BTW-You might want to remove Secret Chest from the Prereqs since that spell deals exclusively with the ethereal plane.

Aaron (had a backpack that was similar once)

Leomund's Secret Chest is the prereq for bag of holding, that's the main reason it is included here.

Hmmm... but Mordenkainen's Magnificent Mansion would somewhat overshadow that. Generally, you only include the most powerful requirement (Why have Flame Arrow when you've got a Fireball?). For example, summoning items don't require Summon Monster I-whatever, they require the specific level. Just a thought.

True, but some people are more picky for prereqs than others, so I thought I would incude it for the sake of completeness.

That said, with how many people can fit into a normal Mordenkainen's Magnificent Mansion, how much weight would you allow to be stored inside this device while nobody was inside? Beware the easy cary of copious amounts of treasure!

I suppose you wouldn't nessicarily need to put a weight limit on, but a volume limit instead as based on the description of the portable hole.

What about a lesser version that uses "Rope Trick" as it's primary prereq. It would provide for a much smaller space to use, but could be made by a much lower level wizard...

maybe put the cost in the neighbour hood of about 25,000gp and put it's storage limit at about 500 lbs. plus the user.

What do you think?

Ya might want to check out the EN World Player's Journal, Vol. 2 - I did a whole article chocked full of little nifty items like this called "Heroic Hideaways"... ;)

Let me know if you like it - or better yet, if you use it! :D
