Ok I'm not really sure if this has been asked before so I apologize if it has. I'm working up a new D20 game set in the near future using a heavily modified set of D20 Modern rules. I'll only have one PC to start with so I was wondering if using Gestalt classes for the PC would be a good idea. Or if it would even work with the D20 Modern rules. I don't know much about the Gestalt rules and I won't be able to look at them till this weekend but any help now would be a lot of help. Thanks.

Well, the gestalt rules are to compensate for the fact that there aren't enough characters to fulfill all of the "party roles". Since d20 modern sort of moves away from the Idea of "set party roles", Gestalt characters only serve to Increase the power level of the characters. Given that, It may just be a better Idea to use a higher level character and take advantage of Modern's liberal multiclassing rules.

I agree with arscott. I have also been looking into this idea, and it just doesn't work as well with d20 Modern rules as it did with D&D. Still, if having the PCs developing abilities at a phenomenal rate isn't a problem for you, I think the rules would work rather well. I would, however, suggest one change.

Since you are effectively combining two classes into one, you might considering having a "primary" class and a "secondary" class. The primary class would grant abilities as normal, but the secondary class would grant a talent at even levels and a bonus feat at odd levels. Staggering abilities like this would keep things more logical, since you would be getting a talent and a feat at each level, instead of two talents at each odd level and two feats at each even level.

Well this weekend I managed to get a look at the gestalt rules and I agree with you guys. The modern classes just don't seem to work well with the idea of the gestalt rules. Any suggestions on helping the lone PC cope with being the only party member though ?
