Practice, practice, practice! Before I started painting minis, the last time I painted anything smaller than a wall was when I built plastic military models as a kid. It was the Wardrums DDM set that gave me inspiration. I looked at the Zakya Rakshasa and Horde Zombie and thought the paint job was lacking and I could do a better job! :p I already had a couple magnifying devices (lamp & goggles) and just jumped in with both feet. When I get frustrated I went online to check out the work of other people. I'm a half-hour away from the Reaper factory, so I've visited there a couple of times during their paint workshop. I'd sit there and paint while listening to others, and ask questions. You can find a calendar on the Reaper site with stores that host demos and paint sessions. Check it out to see if there's anyone local to you hosting a paint party. By the way - Reaper is coming out with an Aboleth-like mini next month! I joke about practice, but for me its choosing time over money. I'd much rather spend some time on the weekends painting, than spending money on cardboard boxes hoping I get what I want. While there are start-up costs with painting your own, it's no different than investing in a case of plastic minis. And once I've spent the money on paints and brushes, I can now buy and create armies of dwarves or lizardmen, something I couldn't do with DDMs. I still buy the singles though - Reaper doesn't have a line of Warforged!
