(answered in no particular order with random comments -- thanks a whole heap for the excellent responses) No. I've never heard of it either. We do not have to worry about pressure issues due to the water breathing. You can't scry an object (corpse), so that doesn't work, but I left out how we would find the corpse *slaps forehead*. The wizard is actually a diviner and has locate object prepared (extended and multiple times). We'll 'fly' along the bottom until he gets a reading. Anything we summon will not be able to find the body because the creature will not stay around for long (even with the wizard's extend feat). Using (lesser) planar ally is a possibility, but I need ideas on what to call and then I would have to suggest such a creature to the DM. And, anything is a meal for kraken. Yes, he is, and that is an excellent point. Other excellent points, too -- I'll make sure to buff with endure elements and sanctuary. We are currently on the ship and will not be able to afford the time/resources for the wizard to teleport us to go purchase scrolls of find the path or anything, but an excellent idea. By the way, locate object is personal, so we can't cast it on a summoned/called creature, and despite the long range it is not long enough to reach the ocean floor. So, this further limits the summoned idea unless you think of something that can do a locate object of a sort. With the freedom of movement, any kraken we encounter can damage us, but will not be able to grab on. We can each sustain a single attack (I hope the wizard can), but hopefully the sanctuary will keep that from happening. The wizard will have dim door/teleport, though, and we both have high Concentration checks, so we're not too worried about risking ourselves. We'll be able to escape, but a kraken might keep us from the target. Oh, one other thing is that for story reasons, the kraken are not willing to step aside. They are actively against us. So, we will not able to talk our way out of an encounter. Actually, it might put us in jeopardy.
