Ghost gain levels?

Ultimately, the question of what can and cannot gain class levels is up to the DM. There's no real rule.

The Advancement portion of the creature's stat block is not really meant to answer the question, "Can this critter earn XP, and what happens if it does?" It is intended to give the DM a guide on how to make a tougher version of the critter as a greater challenge for the PCs. Many people use it for the unitended purpose, and would say that a ghost can gain levels if the creature it was in life could gain levels.

Personally, I'd usually not allow it. One of the major things about many undead, and ghosts especially, is that they are stuck in an immortal, never-changing existance. Is that consistent with changing, learning, and growing?

Yes

I actually planned a major villain in my campaign along these lines. Unfortunately, the campaign died.

I still think it is a great idea. And makes for an opponent I find much more formidable then, say, a vampire or lich. It's just creepier.

The wizard in my campaign (a half-orc who was reincarnated as an elf) recently died in a cursed canyon. I'm bringing him back as an NPC ghost. Fortunately, the wizard was carrying a Ghost Touch Scimitar when he died.

...not that this has anything to do with the topic at hand...

Thanks for the replies.
I had a couple of npc (hobbit horde army) buy it two sessions ago. Since one of them had a crush on the halfling thief , I have him come back because he loves her. He was 16 she is 27. Ah true love!

It was just a quick question since one of the more xp players, had that look of this could have possiblies.
