That was however before 4E came out. Having said that, I have not read or tried 4E nor do I have any interest in doing so. I have been reading over the old 1E books and was starting to get that feeling just from reading them.My next step is to now find a group willing to give the game a chance. I'm also in the same situation as you, mortgage/kids/wife and I too find it harder to maintain my gaming life.  I hope you find what you're looking for.
