The aforementioned player (who is currently bunked up in my apartment) has taken to mocking me over our morning meal for my long posts. He remains amazed you bother to read them. I admit it lacks anything that would approach logical rigor. Given attributes of the spell (long duration, breadth of effect, etc), are pretty rare on any spell in 3.5, that it has no effects that are modeled in the game (i.e. it doesn't affect stats, or give bonuses or penalties to anything), and the lack of comparable spells its difficult to make a concrete argument for or against (compared with the fireball example above). Edit: I don't think that its a bad spell, or excessively powerful. It seems like a great, simple utility spell. At the same time I've never run anything at that level with an illusion-using arcane caster. So I am disinclined to attempt to debate it. I should admit to a hidden agenda. I think that very few people play non-direct damage oriented casters in DnD because the debatable nature of non-combat spells means that they can never be sure that they are "going to get what they think they're buying". It’s not that blowing things up isn't a worthy activity. I support and encourage that kind of thing (in my games). But the perception that 'if caster=~blaster -> long argument' discourages a lot of people from making non-damage focused casters. (If anyone is reading this thread there will be 15 posts from players who only play Illusionists with Evoc/Alt banned). If your fireball spell just works then it’s a lot more emotionally satisfying than spells where the DM is watching you to see if you “do something stupid” so they can turn off the spell. That isn’t a problem with shield or iron body and I feel like it shouldn’t be a problem for illusions either. I really should start reading your story hour again.
