"I have no plans of changing what they do in my campaign while my current player is using them (I dont think it would be fair to suddenly change their use on him all of a sudden), but for future uses of the item, what to do with them." Here's what I would do: Inform the player (through an NPC) that the gloves he has are actually "Superior Gloves of Storing" and that they are a unique item created by a specialist wizard who has passed away. NPC notices gloves, says, "Wow! That craftsmanship - I'd recognize that anywhere! Those were crafted by Zanbar the Insane! Who was he? Well, he was this wizard who was obsessed with storage space. See, he could only afford a very small tower, so he tried to squeeze every little ounce of space out he could find. He eventually died - by accidentally releasing all of his stored items at once. His relatives didn't quite understand him, or magic, and sold off his possessions at a discount. That's probably how you came to possess this item. Do you know the value of this item? Oh no, that's way too low. I tell you what. I'll pay you (Insert a fairly large amount of gold, more than the gloves cost the player, and probably near a +3 shield or so - the idea here is to buy off the player and remove the broken item. Raw gold is much easier to control, and most players will jump at large amounts of it.) for that artifact! Good fortune to you!" Anyway, whether or not you can snatch the item from the player, just don't allow any other gloves to function in that manner. The player can keep his (if he's not too greedy!) and it doesn't wreck your game. Good luck!
