GM/DMs: Leveling Your Heroes

I require downtime in the form of an amount of days equal to the new level, i.e. before gaining 7th level they need 7 days of downtime. These days need not be consecutive, but they're not leveling until they get the total they need. I do this first as a nod at realism and second as a way to mandate downtime - I don't want my players to gain 20th overnight. If they are taking a level in a new class, they need to use those days to train under a mentor, who might require a payment or some service in return from the PC. PCs are allowed to train under other PCs, and finding an NPC mentor could take some time.

Leveling PC's

I usually do a combination. If there's time and we are not in the middle of something I like to give some time over for training. And if my players can come up with some good ideas as to training and leveling I usually give them somethinge extra.

If any wierd multiclassing is going on though I'll insist on some time spent and possibly some roleplaying. I level up between sessions and only between sessions.

I allow players to level up whenever they have the appropriate amount of experience, with no extra training or anything. However, I only hand out experience after each adventure (not at the end of each nightly session), or between chapters of a long adventure.

Characters in my campaign have to train a day plus a day per two levels, at a cost of 150 gp a day. This doesn't have to be done immediately, but can't be done ahead of time. That is, as soon as you have the experience, you can advance in level, but you will have to train at some point before your next level. If you level without having trained for the previous level, you suffer a 10% experience point penalty. There is an additional 5% penalty for taking a class of feat no one in the group has.
