Having run an online gaming community for several years now, I think its a good idea to have some kind of poll as a baseline to evaluate GMs. GMs are neither good nor bad when it comes to it, but players look for different qualities. Do they want a killer DM who offers a challenging game that may very well result in character death unless those characters are played by the most able and knowledgeable players possible? Does the player look for fast progression so they can build their character like they so enjoy? Is the game all about the story and not being too linear? Does a player hate to be railroaded? A poll like this can really help connect like minded players and GMs provided the GMs answering the questions are honest about it.
Given that here is my GM bio: My games will tell an interesting story. Nearly always though my stories tend to drag on. I'm working on better endings and shorter story arcs connected to a longer arc to make it seem like things get to an end more often. My games will be scary. Sometimes but mostly no There will be player vs player combat allowed in my game. Never My games are safe and you don't need to worry about content or character death. Unless the dice somehow kill you without me looking... oops! I will mirror back player ideas that I think are interesting in game. Usually unless its a bad idea. My games use a pre-made map and pre-scripted content. Only when a module is very good or I'm feeling burnt out. The GM is in charge in my games and rule zero is in effect. This is 50/50 as I can be fairly giving as a GM My games rely on improvisation rather than pre-scripted content. Yes most of the time. My games are gonzo and can include lots of strangeness. Huh? lol Characters in my game are destined for greatness, not random death. Yup I roll dice in the open and don't fudge results. I consider fudging a crime. My games include disturbing content. Only on holidays My games focus on interesting characters and drama. Yup Player character death is likely in my games. Not usually I play by the book and rule zero is not used to alter existing rules. 99% true My games are more of a social fun "beer and pretzels" style game. My games tend to be 'serious RP' My game is primarily non-combat in nature. Combat and RP are at least 50/50 Players in my game should be prepared to run when odds are stacked against them. Things aren't usually that bad My game has shared GMing responsibilty with one or more of the other players. I've done this before. Single DM campaigns and shared GMing have their pros and cons. I frequently tinker with the rules of the game. Damn near never. My game focuses on player skill rather than character abilities. Some of both I guess. My game is more enjoyable when I keep my GMing style unknown. Huh? My game focuses on espionage and politics. I've never done this well, kudos to those who can do it. My games contain sexy content. Games with sexy content can be fun but I've never actually run one though I could. Cue porn music!
