So I gmed my first d20 Modern game tonight. It was just me and one player. We don't have a full group yet-- just two players and I am hoping for four-- but I wanted to run through it as I haven't ran a game for probably six years, and haven't played in five. It was fun, and I think it went well. The player did not complete the mission, unfortunately, but I think it is safe to say that it was a combination of really really unlucky rolling (I fudged for him a few times, but I can only do that so much without seeming like he will succeed no matter what). I was running him through an adventure I came up with involving a mothman and a corrupt fringe scientist who had capture the creature and was performing experiments on it. Three of the scientist's research assistans got wind of it, and so the scientist eliminated them. The player was a member of a covert government division that was investigating the paranormal, and his cover was that he was a reporter investigating the story. He got off the track at the start but I managed to straighten him out in the game when he reported in to his superior, so that was okay. From then on in, it was mostly good-- he was very close to unlocking the mystery. Unfortunately at one point he decided to take a swing at a cop who was asking him some questions, and rolled a 1. He ran, and a car chase ensued, which I wasn't expecting. I improvised a bit but stuck to the rules as best I could without some kind of gridded map. Anyway, eventually the chase continued on foot, and the player character ended up climbing up a fire escape to the top of a building. He pulled his gun to attempt to shoot a lock on a door, and the cop open fired and the player went unconscious, and was captured. In-game, the organization he worked for had to deny knowledge of his existence, so that was that. It was too bad-- the player was very close to cracking the case. His bad rolling really hampered him-- he was unable to disable an alarm, so he didn't have time to search the scientist's office properly, and missed some crucial evidence. The incident with the police happened on the way out. Anyway, I think he had fun, and I know I did. The system was really easy to learn and play, which is good. Hopefully we can get a couple more players and have a good campaign to run with.
