GMing tool: the Scope

Hey, I wrote an article about how to use the scope as a way to improve role-play and worldbuilding. The idea is that by change the scope, either in scale, theme or tone, you can gain some new insight about the world, make it seem more real, and increase the overall fun.

A powerful example of changing the scope in fiction is that scene in the Godfather:

In almost every scene, the concept of family in the Godfather is tied to crime and violence. But not in this scene, we see a grandfather playing with his grandson. It creates a striking contrast between Vito and Michael. Vito is the patriarch, someone who wanted to acquire wealth and the status to protect his family. Michael is the ruler, the emperor. He admits no disagreement, and wants to control everything (at least post his sicilian adventure).

Marc Miller included advice similarly in Traveller5...
"Map only as really necessary" - don't map out the sector unless you need to. Don't map a world that's only going to be seen for a layover and cargo.
