Looking back, he thinks these experiences may have done more to solidify his decision not to have children than anything else. He took and passed the detective's exam, and went to work in the Special Investigations bureau, based out of the 39th Patrol District in North Philadelphia. He applied several times to the FBI, but had always been turned down - the stated reason being his lack of experience. </p><p> </p><p>Back in 2001, when DC was hit by the Anthrax mailer Solomon ran across some information that pointed him towards several kooks resident in Philly, and after opening his big mouth about it he was assigned to check them out. Initial investigations promising, and the CDC even sent him one of their guys - Jon Anderson to help out. Solomon never could figure out why the PPD was willing to pay for his help - the city was pretty strapped back then - but he was grateful for it. Hell, he even got on pretty well with the guy - well enough to let the guy call him "Sol" which was a rarity, especially with white guys.</p><p> </p><p>Together they tracked down each lead, following them to their predictable dead ends. Jonathan thought it was weird how the leads all fell apart so quickly, but, as Solomon told him, "That's just police work." Except in one case, that is. One case, he agreed with Jonathan about. Jonas Milikan had been a biochemistry grad student back in '84 before being convicted for the murder of one of his colleagues. A few years earlier, his conviction had been suddenly overturned when some key evidence against him was discovered to be missing during one of Milikan's appeals. During his fourteen years in prison, he'd made a habit of baguely threatening, vaguely pleading letters to government people he held responsible for his incarceration. Solomon thought the anthrax mailer's letters sounded like Milikan's writing. And the first time he and Jonathan had examined his apartment, Jonathan's equipment had detected all sorts of weird s***. Solomon was sure they had the guy. Next day, though, with backup and more equipment to preserve samples, they found nothing. They's been careful about not disturbing anything in their first search, and there was no way Milikan could have even gotten back there before the second search. But the place was clean as a soap factory. And after watching the guy for a while longer, even Solomon had to admit they had nothing on him for the anthrax. Somthing about the guy still stank, though. Solomon just couldn't figure out what. Jon went back to Atlanta, but they still keep in touch, especially when the Eagles play the Packers. He's become a friend, though they avoid talking politics too much.</p><p> </p><p>After the anthrax investigations fizzled, Solomon settled into the routine of a career detective, and finally decided to content himself with it. That was the very day the FBI called. With a laugh, he told his Lt, and put in his notice.
