Adventures in Appendix N The original Dungeons and Dragons was born of two loves: that of games, and that of fantastic literature. Of the latter we can have no doubt because Gygax himself gave us an exhaustive, if not complete, list of the inspiring works, many of which I fear that newer or younger players have not had the pleasure of having been exposed to. Adventures in Appendix N would be part history lesson, part review and part "Giants of the Earth" style column, delving into how to bring the works to life in our games, either directly or through inspiration. As the foundation stones of the game we all play, no matter what edition we call ours, these works will serve to inspire us and excite us and, in the best of cases, get us running to the table to live them for ourselves. The primary focus of the column would be sword and sorcery fiction, from Conan to Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser to the Black Company and Vlad Taltos, with the occasional side trek into weird fantasy (such as the works of Clark Ashton Smith), high fantasy (Tolkien, especially The Hobbit), and even sword and planet "fantasy" such as John Carter. Each column will focus on a single work and examine it from both a literary (briefly) and a gaming (more extensively) perspective. A number of years ago (prior to my son's arrival) I was a writer for White Wolf, working on Exalted and Gamma World d20. I have been busy with work and parenthood since, but have been slowly maneuvering my way back toward professional involvement in the gaming industry again, and an ENWorld column seems like just the place to start.
