I've been pondering some new backgrounds that could be used in a Gothic Horror campaign, whether it's a homebrewed campaign or Ravenloft. The justification for these being new backgrounds and say not something like the core backgrounds with just a horror twist, is that something horrific in the past has shaped the character into what they are such that they are no longer just a housekeeping maid or a boy from a rich family anymore. Some of the ideas I can think of off the top of my head would be: Monster Hunter: You are driven by vengeance over a monster that wronged you, or perhaps something that you've obsessed over all your life, in such a way you are driven by the singular purpose of pursuing this monster. I see this being based on Abraham Van Helsing or Rudolf Van Richten. Survivor: Tragedy drives you, as your were a victim of a monster in the past. It's shattered your life in ways you'll never know the full extent of, and still haunts you in some ways. Perhaps you are marked by the beast itself, and it still hunts you to this day. Asylum Patient: The world as you know it was shattered one day and turned you into someone else no longer recognizable. With an out-lash and ravings you were sent to a mental asylum locked away for years. You've mostly recovered after being subjected to some of the brutal and terrible treatments by the doctors. However some insanity still lingers in you. Haunted: Whether it was some grave sins you committed or something you were drawn in, you've been haunted by malevolent spirits who follow you where you go. You can never be alone, and you can never be among others without these spirits finding you, and constantly whispering in your ears and lurking at the corner of your vision. Test Subject: The memories of your past are scant, you are nothing more than an experiment, a creation of a madman's design. Whether or not you were something before, what you are now has marked you as an abomination that will never live among the cruel society that scorns you as unnatural. The test subject or any of the backgrounds need no special rules at all. A test subject for example could be something as basic as a Human Fighter, no special race and essentially be Frankenstein's Monster or one of Dr. Moreau's creations. With these being very specific backgrounds for gothic horror campaign, would anyone have any ideas what these might have for things like proficiencies, and characteristics?
